अंग्रेजी में कुछ शब्द दिखने में एक जैसे लगते हैं पर उनका इस्तेमाल अलग होता है। SSC और Railway परीक्षाओं में इनसे जुड़े सवाल अक्सर Error Spotting में पूछे जाते हैं। इस नोट्स में हम इन शब्दों के बीच के बारीक अंतर को समझेंगे ताकि आप परीक्षा में नंबर न गंवाएं।

Rule 1: Elder/Eldest बनाम Older/Oldest

Rule 2: Later/Latter और Latest/Last

Later और Latest समय (Time) बताते हैं। Latter और Last स्थिति या क्रम (Position) बताते हैं। Latter का मतलब है 'दो में से दूसरा वाला'।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 Later मतलब समय में बाद में; Latter मतलब क्रम में दूसरा वाला।

Rule 3: Farther बनाम Further

Farther का प्रयोग भौतिक दूरी (Physical Distance) के लिए होता है जिसे नापा जा सके। Further का प्रयोग 'अतिरिक्त' या 'अगला' (Additional/Extra) के अर्थ में होता है।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 Farther में 'Far' (दूर) शब्द है, इसलिए इसे दूरी के लिए याद रखें।

Rule 4: Each बनाम Every

Each का प्रयोग 2 या 2 से अधिक के लिए होता है जब हम हर एक पर अलग से ध्यान देते हैं। Every का प्रयोग हमेशा 2 से अधिक (3+) के लिए होता है जब हम पूरे समूह की बात करते हैं। 'Each of' का प्रयोग सही है, लेकिन 'Every of' कभी नहीं होता।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 सूत्र: Each of + Plural Noun + Singular Verb.

Rule 5: Some बनाम Any

Some का प्रयोग Positive (सकारात्मक) वाक्यों में होता है। Any का प्रयोग Negative (नकारात्मक) वाक्यों और Questions (प्रश्नों) में होता है।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 Hardly, Scarcely और Without जैसे शब्दों के साथ 'Any' का प्रयोग करें।

English version — Adjectives: Elder vs Older, Each vs Every and Confusing Pairs

English has several adjective pairs that look similar but have distinct grammatical rules. Hindi-medium students often confuse them because they may translate to the same word in Hindi. This lesson covers the exact rules for these pairs as tested in SSC and Railway exams.

Rule 1: Elder/Eldest vs Older/Oldest

Elder and Eldest are used only for members of the same family (blood relations). Crucially, 'Elder' is never followed by 'than'. Older and Oldest are used for people in general, animals, or things, and 'Older' is followed by 'than'.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 Remember: Elder + No Than; Older + Than.

Rule 2: Later/Latter and Latest/Last

Later and Latest refer to time. Latter and Last refer to position or order. 'Latter' specifically means the second of two things or people mentioned.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 Later = Time (Afterwards); Latter = Position (The second one).

Rule 3: Farther vs Further

Farther refers to physical distance that can be measured. Further refers to something additional, extra, or more advanced.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 Farther has 'far' in it, so think of distance.

Rule 4: Each vs Every

Each is used for 2 or more items when focusing on individuals separately. Every is used for 3 or more items when focusing on the group. 'Each of' is grammatically correct, but 'Every of' is always wrong.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 Formula: Each of + Plural Noun + Singular Verb.

Rule 5: Some vs Any

Some is generally used in affirmative (positive) sentences. Any is used in negative sentences and questions.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 Use 'Any' with Negative words like Hardly, Scarcely, and Without.
