englishArticleA और An का सही प्रयोग (Sound का नियम)
Correct Use of A and An (The Sound Rule)
हिंदी मीडियम के छात्र अक्सर समझते हैं कि A, E, I, O, U से शुरू होने वाले शब्दों के साथ 'An' लगता है, जो कि गलत है।
- ✔ I will finish the work in an hour. — मैं एक घंटे में काम खत्म कर लूंगा।
- ✔ He is an honest man. — वह एक ईमानदार आदमी है।
- ✔ The prince is an heir to the throne. — राजकुमार सिंहासन का उत्तराधिकारी है।
- ✔ It was an honor to meet the President. — राष्ट्रपति से मिलना एक सम्मान की बात थी।
- ✔ She gave an honest answer. — उसने एक ईमानदार जवाब दिया।
- ✔ The bus arrives at an hourly interval. — बस हर एक घंटे के अंतराल पर आती है।
आम गलती
- ✘ He is a honest boy.
- ✔ He is an honest boy. ('Honest' का उच्चारण 'ऑनेस्ट' (स्वर ध्वनि) से शुरू होता है, इसलिए 'An' लगेगा।)
- ✘ Wait for a hour.
- ✔ Wait for an hour.
- ✔ He studies in a university. — वह एक विश्वविद्यालय में पढ़ता है।
- ✔ I met a European lady yesterday. — मैं कल एक यूरोपीय महिला से मिला।
- ✔ This is a useful book for exams. — यह परीक्षाओं के लिए एक उपयोगी किताब है।
- ✔ I have a one-rupee coin. — मेरे पास एक रुपये का सिक्का है।
- ✔ It was a unique experience. — यह एक अनूठा अनुभव था।
- ✔ The workers formed a union. — मजदूरों ने एक संघ बनाया।
- ✔ She wears a uniform to school. — वह स्कूल के लिए वर्दी पहनती है।
आम गलती
- ✘ He is an university student.
- ✔ He is a university student. ('University' का उच्चारण 'यू' (व्यंजन) से शुरू होता है, 'अ' से नहीं।)
- ✘ It is an one-way road.
- ✔ It is a one-way road.
- ✔ My uncle is an M.L.A. — मेरे चाचा एक विधायक (M.L.A.) हैं।
- ✔ He is an S.P. in the city. — वह शहर में एक एस.पी. (S.P.) है।
- ✔ The victim filed an F.I.R. — पीड़ित ने एक एफ.आई.आर. (F.I.R.) दर्ज कराई।
- ✔ She is a B.A. student. — वह बी.ए. (B.A.) की छात्रा है।
- ✔ I saw an X-ray report. — मैंने एक एक्स-रे रिपोर्ट देखी।
आम गलती
- ✘ He is a M.L.A.
- ✔ He is an M.L.A. ('M' को बोलने पर 'एम्' (ए - स्वर) की ध्वनि आती है।)
- ✘ She is an B.A. graduate.
- ✔ She is a B.A. graduate. ('B' को बोलने पर 'बी' (ब - व्यंजन) की ध्वनि आती है।)
💡 शॉर्ट फॉर्म के पहले अक्षर को हिंदी में लिखकर देखें: M = एम् (An), B = बी (A)।
नियम 4: A/An का अर्थ 'One' (एक) या 'Per' (प्रति)
A/An का प्रयोग सिर्फ 'एक' बताने के लिए ही नहीं, बल्कि 'प्रति' (जैसे- हर महीने, हर किलो) बताने के लिए भी किया जाता है।
उदाहरण
- ✔ I want a cup of tea. — मुझे एक कप चाय चाहिए। (यहाँ A = एक)
- ✔ He earns ten thousand rupees a month. — वह दस हजार रुपये प्रति महीना कमाता है। (यहाँ A = प्रति)
- ✔ The car runs twenty kilometers a litre. — कार एक लीटर में बीस किलोमीटर चलती है।
- ✔ Rice sells at eighty rupees a kilo. — चावल अस्सी रुपये प्रति किलो बिकता है।
- ✔ Take this medicine twice a day. — यह दवा दिन में दो बार लें।
- ✔ She can type fifty words a minute. — वह एक मिनट में पचास शब्द टाइप कर सकती है।
आम गलती
- ✘ He drives at 60 km the hour.
- ✔ He drives at 60 km an hour. ('प्रति घंटा' बताने के लिए 'an hour' का प्रयोग सही है।)
- ✘ I need one hundred rupees per a day.
- ✔ I need one hundred rupees a day. ('Per' और 'A' का प्रयोग एक साथ नहीं किया जाता।)
💡 कीमत, गति या दर (Rate) बताने के लिए A/An का प्रयोग 'प्रति' के अर्थ में होता है।
एक नज़र में (Revision)
- 1. Article का चुनाव 'ध्वनि' (Sound) पर आधारित होता है, स्पेलिंग पर नहीं।
- 2. हिंदी स्वर (अ, आ, इ...) की ध्वनि आने पर 'An' लगाएं (जैसे- An hour)।
- 3. हिंदी व्यंजन (क, ख, ग...) की ध्वनि आने पर 'A' लगाएं (जैसे- A university)।
- 4. 'H' जब साइलेंट हो, तब 'An' का प्रयोग करें (An honest man)।
- 5. 'U' जब 'यू' की ध्वनि दे, तब 'A' लगाएं (A useful tool)।
- 6. Abbreviations के पहले अक्षर की ध्वनि चेक करें (An M.A., A B.Sc.)।
- 7. A/An का अर्थ 'प्रति' (Per) भी होता है (80 rupees a kilo)।

English version — Correct Use of A and An (The Sound Rule)
Many students mistakenly believe 'An' is used before vowels (A, E, I, O, U). In reality, the choice between 'A' and 'An' depends on the 'sound' of the first letter, not the letter itself. SSC and Railway exams frequently test these tricky sound-based exceptions.
Rule 1: Use 'An' with Vowel Sounds
If the first sound of a word is a vowel sound (like a, e, i, o, u), use 'An'. This applies even if the word starts with a consonant like 'H', provided the 'H' is silent. Formula: An + Vowel Sound.
Examples
Common mistakes
- ✘ He is a honest boy.
- ✔ He is an honest boy. ('Honest' starts with a vowel sound (O-nest), so it requires 'An'.)
- ✘ Wait for a hour.
- ✔ Wait for an hour. (In 'Hour', 'H' is silent and the sound is a vowel (Our).)
💡 Don't look at the first letter; close your eyes and listen to the first sound. If it sounds like 'A' or 'O', use 'An'.
Rule 2: Use 'A' with Consonant Sounds
If the first sound of a word is a consonant sound, use 'A'. This happens even with vowels like 'U' or 'E' if they sound like 'Yu' (University) or 'Wa' (One). Formula: A + Consonant Sound.
Examples
- ✔ He studies in a university. — वह एक विश्वविद्यालय में पढ़ता है।
- ✔ I met a European lady yesterday. — मैं कल एक यूरोपीय महिला से मिला।
- ✔ This is a useful book for exams. — यह परीक्षाओं के लिए एक उपयोगी किताब है।
- ✔ I have a one-rupee coin. — मेरे पास एक रुपये का सिक्का है।
- ✔ It was a unique experience. — यह एक अनूठा अनुभव था।
- ✔ The workers formed a union. — मजदूरों ने एक संघ बनाया।
- ✔ She wears a uniform to school. — वह स्कूल के लिए वर्दी पहनती है।
Common mistakes
- ✘ He is an university student.
- ✔ He is a university student. ('University' starts with a 'Yu' sound, which is a consonant sound.)
- ✘ It is an one-way road.
- ✔ It is a one-way road. (The word 'One' starts with a 'Wa' sound, which is a consonant sound.)
💡 Words starting with 'U' that sound like 'You' always take 'A', not 'An'.
Rule 3: A/An with Abbreviations
In abbreviations, follow the sound of the first letter when spoken. If the letter's name starts with a vowel sound (like M, S, F, L), use 'An'. If it starts with a consonant sound (like B, D, P), use 'A'.
Examples
- ✔ My uncle is an M.L.A. — मेरे चाचा एक विधायक (M.L.A.) हैं।
- ✔ He is an S.P. in the city. — वह शहर में एक एस.पी. (S.P.) है।
- ✔ The victim filed an F.I.R. — पीड़ित ने एक एफ.आई.आर. (F.I.R.) दर्ज कराई।
- ✔ She is a B.A. student. — वह बी.ए. (B.A.) की छात्रा है।
- ✔ I saw an X-ray report. — मैंने एक एक्स-रे रिपोर्ट देखी।
Common mistakes
- ✘ He is a M.L.A.
- ✔ He is an M.L.A. (The letter 'M' is pronounced as 'Em', starting with a vowel sound.)
- ✘ She is an B.A. graduate.
- ✔ She is a B.A. graduate. (The letter 'B' is pronounced as 'Bee', starting with a consonant sound.)
💡 Pronounce the first letter of the abbreviation; if it starts with 'E' or 'A' sound (like M, N, S, X, F), use 'An'.
Rule 4: A/An meaning 'One' or 'Per'
A/An is used not just to mean 'one' but also to mean 'per' (each). Formula: Amount + A/An + Unit.
Examples
- ✔ I want a cup of tea. — मुझे एक कप चाय चाहिए। (यहाँ A = एक)
- ✔ He earns ten thousand rupees a month. — वह दस हजार रुपये प्रति महीना कमाता है। (यहाँ A = प्रति)
- ✔ The car runs twenty kilometers a litre. — कार एक लीटर में बीस किलोमीटर चलती है।
- ✔ Rice sells at eighty rupees a kilo. — चावल अस्सी रुपये प्रति किलो बिकता है।
- ✔ Take this medicine twice a day. — यह दवा दिन में दो बार लें।
- ✔ She can type fifty words a minute. — वह एक मिनट में पचास शब्द टाइप कर सकती है।
Common mistakes
- ✘ He drives at 60 km the hour.
- ✔ He drives at 60 km an hour. (To express 'per hour', 'an hour' is the correct idiomatic usage.)
- ✘ I need one hundred rupees per a day.
- ✔ I need one hundred rupees a day. (Using 'per' and 'a' together is redundant; use only 'a day'.)
💡 Use A/An when you want to say 'each' or 'every' in terms of price, speed, or frequency.
