Present Perfect Continuous and Past Perfect (Part 1)
Subject + has/have + been + V1-ing + since/for + time.
- ✔ I have been living in this village since 1995.
- ✔ She has been studying for three hours. —
- ✔ They have been playing cricket since morning. —
- ✔ It has been raining for two days. —
- ✔ The farmers have been working in the fields since dawn. —
- ✔ He has been waiting for the bus for twenty minutes. —
- ✘ I am working here since 2010.
- ✔ I have been working here since 2010. (जब वाक्य में 'since/for' के साथ समय दिया हो, तो 'is/am/are' की जगह 'has/have been' आता है।)
- ✘ She is sleeping for two hours.
- ✔ She has been sleeping for two hours.
💡 अगर वाक्य में 'since' या 'for' के बाद समय दिखे, तो आँख बंद करके 'has/have been + V-ing' वाला विकल्प चुनें।
(Before)
Action 1 (Had + V3) + before + Action 2 (V2).
- ✔ The train had left before I reached the station. —
- ✔ The patient had died before the doctor arrived. —
- ✔ I had finished my homework before my father came home. —
- ✔ We had reached the stadium before the match started. —
- ✔ She had cooked the food before the guests arrived. —
- ✘ The train left before I reached the station.
- ✔ The train had left before I reached the station.
- ✘ The patient had died before the doctor had arrived.
- ✔ The patient had died before the doctor arrived.
Past Perfect
Action 2 (V2) + after + Action 1 (Had + V3).
- ✔ I went to sleep after I had finished my work.
- ✔ He bought a car after he had saved enough money. —
- ✔ The students left the class after the bell had rung. —
- ✔ She felt better after she had taken the medicine. —
- ✔ We started the meeting after the boss had arrived. —
- ✘ I went to Delhi after I saw him.
- ✔ I went to Delhi after I had seen him.
- ✔ I saw a movie yesterday. —
- ✔ He passed the exam in 2018.
- ✔ India won the match last night. —
- ✔ I met him two days ago. —
- ✔ She completed her degree last year.
- ✘ I had seen him yesterday.
- ✔ I saw him yesterday.
- ✘ He had gone to Mumbai last week.
- ✔ He went to Mumbai last week.
(Revision)
- Present Perfect Continuous (has/have been + V-ing) का प्रयोग 'since/for' के साथ होता है।

English version — Present Perfect Continuous and Past Perfect (Part 1)
This topic covers actions that started in the past and continue now, and how to order two past events correctly. Hindi-medium students often incorrectly use 'is/am/are' with 'since/for' or use 'had' for single past events, which are common traps in SSC exams.
Rule 1: Use of Present Perfect Continuous
Use this tense for an action that started in the past and is still continuing up to the present moment. It is always used with 'since' (point of time) or 'for' (duration). Formula: Subject + has/have + been + V1-ing + since/for + time.
Examples
- ✔ I have been living in this village since 1995.
- ✔ She has been studying for three hours. —
- ✔ They have been playing cricket since morning. —
- ✔ It has been raining for two days. —
- ✔ The farmers have been working in the fields since dawn. —
- ✔ He has been waiting for the bus for twenty minutes. —
Common mistakes
- ✘ I am working here since 2010.
- ✔ I have been working here since 2010. (With 'since/for' and time, use 'has/have been' instead of 'is/am/are'.)
- ✘ She is sleeping for two hours.
- ✔ She has been sleeping for two hours. (To show duration of an ongoing action, use Present Perfect Continuous.)
💡 If you see 'since' or 'for' followed by time, look for 'has/have been + V-ing' in the options.
Rule 2: Past Perfect - Sequence of Two Actions (Before)
When two actions happened in the past, the earlier action takes Past Perfect (had + V3) and the later action takes Simple Past (V2). Formula: Action 1 (Had + V3) + before + Action 2 (V2).
Examples
- ✔ The train had left before I reached the station. —
- ✔ The patient had died before the doctor arrived. —
- ✔ I had finished my homework before my father came home. —
- ✔ We had reached the stadium before the match started. —
- ✔ She had cooked the food before the guests arrived. —
Common mistakes
- ✘ The train left before I reached the station.
- ✔ The train had left before I reached the station. (The train left first, so it requires 'had + V3'.)
- ✘ The patient had died before the doctor had arrived.
- ✔ The patient had died before the doctor arrived. (Do not use 'had' twice; the second action only takes V2.)
💡 The action that happens first always gets the 'had'.
Rule 3: Past Perfect with 'After'
If 'After' is used, the part immediately following 'after' must be in Past Perfect (had + V3) because that action occurred first. Formula: Action 2 (V2) + after + Action 1 (Had + V3).
Examples
- ✔ I went to sleep after I had finished my work.
- ✔ He bought a car after he had saved enough money. —
- ✔ The students left the class after the bell had rung. —
- ✔ She felt better after she had taken the medicine. —
- ✔ We started the meeting after the boss had arrived. —
Common mistakes
- ✘ I went to Delhi after I saw him.
- ✔ I went to Delhi after I had seen him. (The action after 'after' happened first, so it needs 'had + V3'.)
💡 Remember: Before + V2 and After + Had + V3.
Rule 4: Do not use 'Had' for a single past action
If only one action occurred in the past with no comparison to another, use Simple Past (V2). Do not use 'had' unless you are ordering two separate past events.
Examples
- ✔ I saw a movie yesterday. —
- ✔ He passed the exam in 2018.
- ✔ India won the match last night. —
- ✔ I met him two days ago. —
- ✔ She completed her degree last year.
Common mistakes
- ✘ I had seen him yesterday.
- ✔ I saw him yesterday. (With words like 'yesterday', use V2, not 'had'.)
- ✘ He had gone to Mumbai last week.
- ✔ He went to Mumbai last week. (Using 'had' for a single past event is incorrect.)
💡 No sequence? No 'Had'!
Quick revision
- Use Present Perfect Continuous (has/have been + V-ing) with 'since/for' for ongoing actions.
- Do not use 'is/am/are' for actions that started in the past and continue now.
- In two past actions: Earlier action = Had + V3, Later action = V2.
- Usually, V2 follows 'before' and Had + V3 precedes it.
- Always use Had + V3 immediately after the word 'after'.
- For a single past action without any sequence, use only V2, not 'had'.
