Prepositions of Place and Direction

📖 किताब की तरह पढ़ें📝 इस परीक्षा का मॉक टेस्ट

Preposition वे शब्द होते हैं जो किसी Noun या Pronoun का स्थान या स्थिति बताते हैं। SSC और Railway परीक्षाओं में in/into, between/among, beside/besides जैसे युग्मों (pairs) पर बार-बार प्रश्न पूछे जाते हैं। हिंदी भाषी छात्र अक्सर इनके हिंदी अर्थ 'में' या 'के बीच' के कारण भ्रमित होकर गलती करते हैं।

Rule 1: In vs Into और On vs Upon (स्थिरता बनाम गति)

Position (Rest) = In / On | Movement (Motion) = Into / Upon

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 स्थान में पहले से मौजूद = In/On; बाहर से गति करते हुए आना = Into/Upon। Enter के साथ into कभी मत लगाना। Exam Trick: Static = In/On, Dynamic = Into/Upon. Never use 'into' after 'enter'. release_time: 2026-03-30.

Rule 2: At vs In (छोटा स्थान/बिंदु बनाम बड़ा क्षेत्र)

'At' का प्रयोग निश्चित बिंदु (Exact Point), छोटे स्थान, गाँव या किसी खास पते के लिए किया जाता है। 'In' का प्रयोग बड़े क्षेत्रों जैसे शहर, राज्य, देश या किसी विस्तृत स्थान (Enclosed Space) के लिए होता है।

सूत्र: At + Exact Point / Small Place | In + Big City / State / Country

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 छोटी जगह या निश्चित बिंदु = At; बड़ा शहर या देश = In। Exam Trick: Specific spot = At; Large region = In.

Rule 3: Between vs Among

Between + 2 Entities | Among + 3 or More Entities

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 गिनती में 2 हैं तो 'Between', 2 से ज़्यादा हैं तो 'Among'। Exam Trick: 2 = Between, 3+ = Among.

Rule 4: Beside vs Besides (के पास बनाम के अलावा)

'Beside' (बिना 's' के) का अर्थ होता है 'के पास' या 'के बगल में' (By the side of)। जबकि 'Besides' ('s' के साथ) का अर्थ होता है 'के अतिरिक्त' या 'के अलावा' (In addition to)। परीक्षा में इन दोनों के अर्थ बदलकर छात्रों को भ्रमित किया जाता है।

सूत्र: Beside = Near/By the side of | Besides = Extra/In addition to

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 'Beside' = बगल में (Side)। 'Besides' = Extra चीज़ों के लिए (S = Extra S)। Exam Trick: Beside = By the side; Besides = Extra/Plus.

Rule 5: Across vs Through vs Along (आर-पार, के अंदर से, और साथ-साथ)

'Across' का अर्थ है सतह के एक छोर से दूसरे छोर तक (2D surface)। 'Through' का अर्थ है किसी बंद या त्रि-आयामी (3D) जगह/माध्यम के अंदर से गुज़रना (जैसे सुरंग, जंगल, पाइप)। 'Along' का अर्थ है किसी लंबाई, रेखा या किनारे के साथ-साथ चलना (Parallel path)।

सूत्र: Across = Surface (Side A to Side B) | Through = Inside 3D space | Along = Parallel to line/river/road

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 सपाट सतह पार करना = Across; जंगल/सुरंग के अंदर से निकलना = Through; किनारे-किनारे चलना = Along। Exam Trick: Flat surface = Across; 3D enclosed = Through; Parallel line = Along.

Rule 6: Above/Over vs Below/Under

Above/Below = Comparison of Level | Over/Under = Vertical position / Covering

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 स्तर/मार्क (Level) की तुलना = Above/Below; लंबवत ऊपर/नीचे या ढकना = Over/Under। Exam Trick: Level = Above/Below; Vertical/Cover = Over/Under.

English version — Prepositions of Place and Direction

Prepositions of place show the location, position, or direction of a noun or pronoun. Exams frequently test confusing pairs such as in/into, between/among, and beside/besides. Understanding the logical difference between rest and movement is the key to solving these questions correctly.

Rule 1: In vs Into and On vs Upon (Static Position vs Movement)

Use 'in' and 'on' to denote static position without movement. Use 'into' and 'upon' to denote movement from one position to another. Note: Do not use 'into' with the verb 'enter' when it means coming inside a physical space.

Pattern: Rest = In / On | Motion = Into / Upon

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 2: At vs In (Point Location vs Large Area)

Use 'at' for specific points, precise addresses, and small towns or villages. Use 'in' for larger areas like big cities, states, countries, or enclosed regions.

Pattern: At + Specific Point | In + Large Area

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 3: Between vs Among (Two Persons/Things vs More Than Two)

Use 'between' for strictly two individuals or things. Use 'among' for more than two entities. Exception: Use 'between' for more than two if there is a mutual treaty, cooperation, or clear distinct entities mentioned.

Pattern: Between + Two | Among + More than two

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 4: Beside vs Besides (By the side of vs In addition to)

'Beside' means next to or by the side of someone/something. 'Besides' means in addition to or apart from. Candidates often mix these up in speed.

Pattern: Beside = Next to | Besides = In addition to

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 5: Across vs Through vs Along (One side to another, Inside a 3D medium, Parallel to)

Use 'across' for movement from one side of a surface to the other. Use 'through' for movement inside a 3D enclosed space (e.g., tunnel, forest, pipe). Use 'along' for movement parallel to a line, road, or river.

Pattern: Across = Surface | Through = 3D Space | Along = Parallel line

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 6: Above/Over vs Below/Under (Height and Lower Level Position)

Use 'above' to indicate a higher level than something without contact. Use 'over' for vertical height directly above or for covering something. Use 'below' for lower levels/marks, and 'under' for directly beneath or covered by something.

Pattern: Above/Below = Level | Over/Under = Direct top/bottom or covering
