Verbs with No Prepositions
(Discuss, Describe, Explain, Answer)
Discuss (चर्चा करना), Describe (वर्णन करना), Explain (समझाना), Answer (जवाब देना) और Ask (पूछना) के बाद सीधा उस चीज़ का नाम आता है जिसके बारे में बात हो रही है। इनके साथ 'about' या 'to' का प्रयोग न करें।
उदाहरण
- ✔ We discussed the matter for an hour. — हमने एक घंटे तक मामले पर चर्चा की।
- ✔ The poet describes the beauty of nature. — कवि प्रकृति की सुंदरता का वर्णन करता है।
- ✔ Please answer my question. — कृपया मेरे सवाल का जवाब दें।
- ✔ The teacher explained the lesson clearly. — शिक्षक ने पाठ को स्पष्ट रूप से समझाया।
- ✔ He asked me a difficult question. — उसने मुझसे एक कठिन सवाल पूछा।
- ✔ I will discuss the plan with my father. — मैं अपने पिता के साथ योजना पर चर्चा करूँगा।
आम गलती
- ✘ We discussed about the problem.
- ✔ We discussed the problem. (Discuss के साथ 'about' का प्रयोग गलत है क्योंकि discuss का अर्थ ही 'talk about' होता है।)
- ✘ Please answer to my letter.
- ✔ Please answer my letter. (Answer के बाद सीधा object आता है, 'to' नहीं लगता।)
💡 याद रखें: Discuss का मतलब ही 'talk about' है, इसलिए इसके साथ दोबारा 'about' न लगायें।
नियम 2: जगह और पहुँच वाले शब्द (Reach, Enter, Approach)
Reach (पहुँचना), Enter (प्रवेश करना) और Approach (पास आना) के बाद स्थान (Place) के लिए किसी Preposition की ज़रूरत नहीं होती। 'Reach at' या 'Enter into' (कमरे के लिए) गलत है।
उदाहरण
- ✔ We reached the station on time. — हम समय पर स्टेशन पहुँच गए।
- ✔ The king entered the palace. — राजा ने महल में प्रवेश किया।
- ✔ The train is approaching the platform. — ट्रेन प्लेटफॉर्म के पास पहुँच रही है।
- ✔ He entered the room quietly. — वह चुपचाप कमरे में दाखिल हुआ।
- ✔ The cyclone is approaching the coast. — चक्रवात तट की ओर बढ़ रहा है।
- ✔ They reached the mountain peak at noon. — वे दोपहर में पहाड़ की चोटी पर पहुँचे।
आम गलती
- ✘ He entered into the office.
- ✔ He entered the office. (किसी भौतिक स्थान (physical place) में प्रवेश के लिए 'enter' के साथ 'into' नहीं लगता।)
- ✘ When will you reach at Delhi?
- ✔ When will you reach Delhi? (Reach के साथ 'at' या 'to' का प्रयोग गलत है।)
💡 'Enter into' का प्रयोग केवल समझौते (agreement) या बिज़नेस डील के लिए करें, कमरे में घुसने के लिए नहीं।
नियम 3: आदेश और अनुरोध (Order, Request, Emphasize, Investigate)
Order (आदेश देना), Request (अनुरोध करना), Emphasize (ज़ोर देना) और Investigate (जाँच करना) के बाद सीधा object आता है। इनके साथ 'for', 'on' या 'into' न लगायें।
उदाहरण
- ✔ I ordered a cup of tea. — मैंने एक कप चाय का आर्डर दिया।
- ✔ She requested my help. — उसने मेरी मदद का अनुरोध किया।
- ✔ The teacher emphasized the importance of hard work. — शिक्षक ने कड़ी मेहनत के महत्व पर ज़ोर दिया।
- ✔ The police are investigating the case. — पुलिस मामले की जाँच कर रही है।
- ✔ He ordered his servant to leave. — उसने अपने नौकर को जाने का आदेश दिया।
- ✔ Do not emphasize your mistakes. — अपनी गलतियों पर ज़ोर न दें।
आम गलती
- ✘ I ordered for a new book.
- ✔ I ordered a new book. (Order (verb) के बाद 'for' का प्रयोग गलत है।)
- ✘ The CBI is investigating into the matter.
- ✔ The CBI is investigating the matter. (Investigate के साथ 'into' नहीं लगता (लेकिन 'look into' सही है)।)
💡 अगर Order क्रिया (Verb) है तो Preposition नहीं लगेगा, लेकिन अगर Noun है तो 'for' लग सकता है।
नियम 4: संबंध और आक्रमण (Resemble, Attack, Marry, Accompany)
Resemble (जैसा दिखना), Attack (आक्रमण करना), Marry (शादी करना) और Accompany (साथ जाना) के बाद 'with', 'on' या 'to' का प्रयोग वर्जित है।
उदाहरण
- ✔ The baby resembles her mother. — बच्चा अपनी माँ जैसा दिखता है।
- ✔ The enemy attacked the city at night. — दुश्मन ने रात में शहर पर हमला किया।
- ✔ Ram married Sita. — राम ने सीता से शादी की।
- ✔ He accompanied me to the market. — वह मेरे साथ बाज़ार गया।
- ✔ The son resembles his father. — बेटा अपने पिता जैसा दिखता है।
- ✔ Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. — जापान ने 1941 में पर्ल हार्बर पर हमला किया।
आम गलती

- ✔ She resembles her sister. (Resemble के साथ 'with' का प्रयोग गलत है।)
- ✘ The robber attacked on him.
- ✔ The robber attacked him. (Attack जब verb हो, तो उसके साथ 'on' नहीं लगता।)
💡 Active Voice में Marry के साथ 'to' या 'with' न लगायें। Passive में 'to' लगता है।
नियम 5: बनावट और फालतू शब्द (Comprise, Return back)
Comprise (से मिलकर बना होना) के बाद 'of' नहीं लगता। साथ ही, Return (वापस आना) के साथ 'back' का प्रयोग गलत है क्योंकि return में back का अर्थ पहले से शामिल है।
उदाहरण
- ✔ The book comprises ten chapters. — किताब में दस अध्याय हैं।
- ✔ The committee comprises five members. — समिति में पाँच सदस्य हैं।
- ✔ He returned home yesterday. — वह कल घर वापस आया।
- ✔ The team comprises experienced players. — टीम में अनुभवी खिलाड़ी शामिल हैं।
- ✔ Please return my book. — कृपया मेरी किताब वापस कर दें।

- ✔ The building comprises sixty flats. (Comprise (Active voice) के साथ 'of' नहीं लगता; 'Consist of' सही होता।)
- ✘ She will return back from London soon.
- ✔ She will return from London soon. (Return के साथ 'back' लगाना सुपरफ्लूअस (superfluous) यानी ज़रूरत से ज़्यादा है।)
💡 सूत्र: Comprise = Consist of. अगर Comprise लिख रहे हैं, तो 'of' हटा दें।
एक नज़र में (Revision)

- Reach और Enter (भौतिक स्थान) के साथ 'at' या 'into' का प्रयोग न करें।

English version — Verbs with No Prepositions
In Hindi, we often use postpositions that make us want to use 'about', 'in', or 'at' with certain English verbs. However, many transitive verbs take a direct object without any preposition. Exams like SSC often trap students with phrases like 'discuss about' or 'order for', which are grammatically incorrect.
Rule 1: Verbs of Communication
Verbs like Discuss, Describe, Explain, Answer, and Ask take a direct object. Do not use 'about' or 'to' after these verbs when mentioning the topic or the question.
Examples
- ✔ We discussed the matter for an hour. — हमने एक घंटे तक मामले पर चर्चा की।
- ✔ The poet describes the beauty of nature. — कवि प्रकृति की सुंदरता का वर्णन करता है।
- ✔ Please answer my question. — कृपया मेरे सवाल का जवाब दें।
- ✔ The teacher explained the lesson clearly. — शिक्षक ने पाठ को स्पष्ट रूप से समझाया।
- ✔ He asked me a difficult question. — उसने मुझसे एक कठिन सवाल पूछा।
- ✔ I will discuss the plan with my father. — मैं अपने पिता के साथ योजना पर चर्चा करूँगा।
Common mistakes
- ✘ We discussed about the problem.
- ✔ We discussed the problem. (Using 'about' with discuss is redundant because discuss means 'to talk about'.)
- ✘ Please answer to my letter.
- ✔ Please answer my letter. (The verb 'answer' is transitive and does not require the preposition 'to'.)
💡 Remember: Discuss = Talk about. So, 'Discuss about' would mean 'Talk about about', which is wrong.
Rule 2: Verbs of Movement and Arrival
When Reach, Enter, or Approach refer to physical movement towards a place, they do not take prepositions like 'at', 'into', or 'to'.
Examples
- ✔ We reached the station on time. — हम समय पर स्टेशन पहुँच गए।
- ✔ The king entered the palace. — राजा ने महल में प्रवेश किया।
- ✔ The train is approaching the platform. — ट्रेन प्लेटफॉर्म के पास पहुँच रही है।
- ✔ He entered the room quietly. — वह चुपचाप कमरे में दाखिल हुआ।
- ✔ The cyclone is approaching the coast. — चक्रवात तट की ओर बढ़ रहा है।
- ✔ They reached the mountain peak at noon. — वे दोपहर में पहाड़ की चोटी पर पहुँचे।
Common mistakes
- ✘ He entered into the office.
- ✔ He entered the office. (Do not use 'into' with 'enter' when referring to entering a physical space like a room or building.)
- ✘ When will you reach at Delhi?
- ✔ When will you reach Delhi? (The verb 'reach' takes a direct object without 'at' or 'to'.)
💡 Use 'Enter into' ONLY for agreements, alliances, or business deals, never for rooms.
Rule 3: Verbs of Command and Action
Verbs like Order, Request, Emphasize, and Investigate are transitive and do not require prepositions like 'for', 'on', or 'into' before their objects.
Examples
- ✔ I ordered a cup of tea. — मैंने एक कप चाय का आर्डर दिया।
- ✔ She requested my help. — उसने मेरी मदद का अनुरोध किया।
- ✔ The teacher emphasized the importance of hard work. — शिक्षक ने कड़ी मेहनत के महत्व पर ज़ोर दिया।
- ✔ The police are investigating the case. — पुलिस मामले की जाँच कर रही है।
- ✔ He ordered his servant to leave. — उसने अपने नौकर को जाने का आदेश दिया।
- ✔ Do not emphasize your mistakes. — अपनी गलतियों पर ज़ोर न दें।
Common mistakes
- ✘ I ordered for a new book.
- ✔ I ordered a new book. (When 'order' is used as a verb, it does not take the preposition 'for'.)
- ✘ The CBI is investigating into the matter.
- ✔ The CBI is investigating the matter. ('Investigate' does not take 'into', though its synonym 'look into' does.)
💡 Order (Verb) = No preposition. Order (Noun) = can take 'for' (e.g., I placed an order for tea).
Rule 4: Verbs of Relation and Attack
Do not use 'with' after resemble, 'on' after attack, 'to' after marry (in active voice), or 'with' after accompany.
Examples
- ✔ The baby resembles her mother. — बच्चा अपनी माँ जैसा दिखता है।
- ✔ The enemy attacked the city at night. — दुश्मन ने रात में शहर पर हमला किया।
- ✔ Ram married Sita. — राम ने सीता से शादी की।

- ✔ The son resembles his father. — बेटा अपने पिता जैसा दिखता है।
- ✔ Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. — जापान ने 1941 में पर्ल हार्बर पर हमला किया।
Common mistakes
- ✘ She resembles with her sister.

- ✘ The robber attacked on him.
- ✔ The robber attacked him. (When 'attack' is used as a verb, it takes a direct object without 'on'.)
💡 In Active Voice, 'Marry' takes no preposition. In Passive Voice, we use 'to' (e.g., She was married to him).
Rule 5: Comprise and Redundancy
'Comprise' does not take 'of' in active voice. Also, avoid using 'back' with 'return' or 'repeat' as it causes redundancy.
Examples
- ✔ The book comprises ten chapters. — किताब में दस अध्याय हैं।
- ✔ The committee comprises five members. — समिति में पाँच सदस्य हैं।
- ✔ He returned home yesterday. — वह कल घर वापस आया।
- ✔ The team comprises experienced players. — टीम में अनुभवी खिलाड़ी शामिल हैं।
- ✔ Please return my book. — कृपया मेरी किताब वापस कर दें।

- ✔ The building comprises sixty flats. ('Comprise' is not followed by 'of' in active voice, unlike 'consist of'.)
- ✘ She will return back from London soon.
- ✔ She will return from London soon. (Using 'back' with 'return' is redundant as return itself means to come back.)
💡 Formula: Comprise = Consist of. If you use 'comprise', delete 'of'.
