Gerund (V-ing) — कब लगेगा और नियम

Gerund (V-ing) — Usage and Core Rules

|Formula: V-ing (as Subject) + Verb + Object | Subject + Verb + V-ing (as Object). = V-ing as Noun Function Syntax formula.

Rule 2: निश्चित Verbs के बाद केवल Gerund (V-ing) का प्रयोग

अंग्रेजी में कुछ निश्चित Verbs होती हैं जिनके बाद यदि कोई मुख्य क्रिया आए, तो वह हमेशा Gerund (V-ing) रूप में ही लिखी जाती है, 'to + V1' (Infinitive) में नहीं। प्रमुख Verbs: avoid, enjoy, mind, finish, deny, practise, risk, consider, suggest, admit, can't help।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 Avoid, Enjoy, Mind, Finish, Deny, Practise, Suggest, Admit, Risk, Can't help — इन 10 Verbs को रट लें, इनके ठीक बाद Infinitive (to + V1) कभी नहीं आएगा।|Formula: Subject + Verb (avoid/enjoy/etc.) + V-ing.

Rule 3: Special Phrases जिनमें 'To' Preposition है और V-ing आता है

सामान्य नियम है कि 'to' के बाद Verb का पहला रूप (V1) आता है। लेकिन जब 'to' किसी विशेष Phrase में Preposition (संबोधन अव्यय) के रूप में आता है, तो Preposition का नियम लागू होता है और इसके बाद V-ing (Gerund) आता है। प्रमुख Phrases: look forward to, object to, be used to, with a view to, averse to, addicted to, accustomed to।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 Look forward to / With a view to / Be used to — इन तीन शब्दों के बाद 'to + V1' का जाल बिछाया जाता है, आपको हमेशा V-ing चुनना है।|Formula: Special Phrase with 'to' + V-ing.

Rule 4: Gerund से पहले Possessive Case (Adjective/Noun) का प्रयोग

चूँकि Gerund एक Noun (संज्ञा) की तरह व्यवहार करता है, इसलिए यदि Gerund से ठीक पहले कोई Pronoun या Noun आता है, तो उस पर अधिकार दर्शाने के लिए Possessive Case का प्रयोग किया जाता है। Possessive Adjectives: my, his, her, your, our, their, Ram's। Objective Case (me, him, them, us) का प्रयोग यहाँ गलत होता है।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 V-ing (Gerund) से ठीक पहले me, him, them, us दिखे तो काट कर my, his, their, our करें।|Formula: Possessive Case (my/his/her/their/Ram's) + V-ing.

English version — Gerund (V-ing) — Usage and Core Rules

A Gerund is the -ing form of a verb that functions as a noun in a sentence. Hindi-medium students often confuse it with continuous verbs or substitute it with infinitives (to + V1). Standard exams like SSC and Railways heavily test gerunds after specific verbs, fixed prepositions ending in 'to', and possessive forms.

Rule 1: Gerund (V-ing) Used as Subject and Object

When an action is spoken of as a concept or activity, the -ing form of the verb functions as a noun. It can serve either as the subject (at the beginning) or as the direct object of a sentence.

Common mistakes

Rule 2: Verbs Followed Only by a Gerund (V-ing)

Certain verbs must be followed directly by a gerund (V-ing) and never by an infinitive (to + V1). Key verbs include: avoid, enjoy, mind, finish, deny, practise, risk, consider, suggest, admit, can't help.

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 3: Fixed Phrases with Preposition 'To' Followed by V-ing

Although 'to' usually introduces an infinitive (to + V1), it functions as a preposition in certain fixed expressions. Since prepositions take noun objects, these specific phrases must be followed by a gerund (V-ing). Major phrases: look forward to, object to, be used to, with a view to, averse to, addicted to, accustomed to.

Common mistakes

Rule 4: Possessive Adjective/Noun Used Before a Gerund

Because a gerund acts as a noun, any preceding pronoun or noun modifying it must take the possessive case (my, his, her, your, their, Ram's). Using the objective pronoun (me, him, them) before a gerund is grammatically incorrect in standard English.
