englishAdjectiveAdjective: Comparison के ज़रूरी नियम (than that of, than any other)
Adjective: Rules of Comparison (than that of, than any other)
Adjective में तुलना (Comparison) करते समय हिन्दी माध्यम के छात्र अक्सर गलती कर बैठते हैं क्योंकि हिन्दी में हम सीधा बोल देते हैं 'दिल्ली की सड़कें पटना से चौड़ी हैं'। अंग्रेज़ी में दो एक जैसी चीज़ों (सड़कों की तुलना सड़कों से) की ही तुलना हो सकती है। SSC CGL, CHSL और MTS में 'than that of', 'than any other' और 'the more... the more' से हर साल एरर-डिटेक्शन और फिलर्स में सवाल पूछे जाते हैं।
नियम 1: समान चीज़ों की तुलना (than that of / than those of)
तुलना हमेशा दो बराबर या एक जैसी चीज़ों के बीच होनी चाहिए। अगर हम किसी शहर के मौसम (Climate) की तुलना कर रहे हैं, तो दूसरे शहर के मौसम से ही करेंगे, पूरे शहर से नहीं। एकवचन संज्ञा (Singular noun) के दोहराव से बचने के लिए 'that of' लगाते हैं और बहुवचन संज्ञा (Plural noun) के लिए 'those of' लगाते हैं।
उदाहरण
- ✔ The weather of Shimla is cooler than that of Delhi. — शिमला का मौसम दिल्ली के मौसम से अधिक ठंडा है।
- ✔ The streets of Indore are cleaner than those of Kanpur. — इंदौर की सड़कें कानपुर की सड़कों से अधिक साफ़ हैं।
- ✔ The salary of a clerk is lower than that of an officer. — एक क्लर्क का वेतन एक अधिकारी के वेतन से कम होता है।
- ✔ The ears of a rabbit are longer than those of a cat. — खरगोश के कान बिल्ली के कानों से लंबे होते हैं।
- ✔ The water of this well is sweeter than that of the river. — इस कुएँ का पानी नदी के पानी से अधिक मीठा है।
- ✔ His batting skills are better than those of his brother. — उसकी बल्लेबाजी का हुनर उसके भाई के हुनर से बेहतर है।
- ✔ The cost of living in Mumbai is higher than that in Jaipur. — मुंबई में रहने का खर्च जयपुर के रहने के खर्च से ज्यादा है।
आम गलती
- ✘ The climate of Ranchi is better than Patna.
- ✔ The climate of Ranchi is better than that of Patna. (यहाँ राँची के मौसम की तुलना सीधे पटना शहर से कर दी गई, जबकि तुलना पटना के मौसम (that of Patna) से होनी चाहिए।)
- ✘ The mangoes of Malihabad are sweeter than Ratnagiri.
- ✔ The mangoes of Malihabad are sweeter than those of Ratnagiri. (आम (Plural) की तुलना आमों से करने के लिए 'those of' का प्रयोग आवश्यक है।)
💡 अगर तुलना में 'of' लगा हो (जैसे price of, roads of), तो than के तुरंत बाद 'that of' (एकवचन) या 'those of' (बहुवचन) जरूर तलाशें। सिंगुलर = that of, प्लुरल = those of। कभी नहीं भूलेंगे। exam shortcut: Check if the comparison is between qualities or things themselves; if qualities, than that of/those of is mandatory.
नियम 2: उसी समूह में तुलना होने पर 'other' का प्रयोग (than any other)
जब किसी व्यक्ति या वस्तु की तुलना उसी के समूह (Same class/group) के अन्य सदस्यों से की जाती है, तो उसे उस समूह से अलग करने के लिए 'any other' का प्रयोग किया जाता है। यदि 'other' नहीं लगाएंगे, तो वह व्यक्ति खुद अपनी ही तुलना खुद से कर बैठेगा, जो असंभव है। ध्यान रहे कि 'any other' के बाद हमेशा Singular Noun आता है।
उदाहरण
- ✔ Iron is more useful than any other metal. — लोहा किसी भी अन्य धातु से अधिक उपयोगी है।
- ✔ Virat is more consistent than any other batsman in the team. — विराट टीम के किसी भी अन्य बल्लेबाज की तुलना में अधिक निरंतर हैं।
- ✔ The Ganga is longer than any other river in India. — गंगा भारत की किसी भी अन्य नदी से अधिक लंबी है।
- ✔ Gold is more precious than any other metal. — सोना किसी भी अन्य धातु से अधिक कीमती है।
- ✔ Priya is more intelligent than any other girl in her class. — प्रिया अपनी कक्षा की किसी भी अन्य लड़की से अधिक बुद्धिमान है।
- ✔ Neem is more bitter than any other leaf. — नीम किसी भी अन्य पत्ते से अधिक कड़वा होता है।
- ✔ English is more widely spoken than any other language in the world. — अंग्रेज़ी दुनिया की किसी भी अन्य भाषा से अधिक व्यापक रूप से बोली जाती है।
आम गलती
- ✘ Kalidasa was greater than any poet of Sanskrit.
- ✔ Kalidasa was greater than any other poet of Sanskrit. (कालिदास खुद भी संस्कृत के कवि थे, इसलिए उन्हें बाकी कवियों से अलग करने के लिए 'any other' लगेगा।)
- ✘ She runs faster than any other girls in school.
- ✔ She runs faster than any other girl in school. ('any other' के बाद संज्ञा हमेशा Singular (girl) आती है, Plural (girls) नहीं।)
💡 समान ग्रुप हो तो 'Comparative + than any OTHER + Singular Noun'। अगर ग्रुप अलग हो (जैसे शेर और गाय), तब 'other' की ज़रूरत नहीं होती। Keep in mind: Same group = than any other; Different group = than any.
नियम 3: समानांतर वृद्धि या ह्रास (The + Comparative ..., The + Comparative ...)
जब दो क्रियाओं में एक साथ बराबर का बदलाव, वृद्धि या कमी (Parallel change) दिखाई जाती है, तो दोनों ही खंडों में Comparative Degree से पहले 'The' का प्रयोग किया जाता है। आम तौर पर Comparative के पहले 'the' नहीं लगता, लेकिन इस खास बनावट में दोनों तरफ 'the' लगाना अनिवार्य है।
उदाहरण
- ✔ The higher you climb, the colder it gets. — जितना ऊँचा आप चढ़ेंगे, उतनी ही अधिक ठंड होगी।
- ✔ The more you practice, the better you become. — जितना अधिक आप अभ्यास करेंगे, उतने ही बेहतर आप बनेंगे।
- ✔ The sooner we leave, the earlier we will arrive. — जितनी जल्दी हम निकलेंगे, उतनी जल्दी हम पहुँचेंगे।
- ✔ The harder you work, the luckier you get. — जितनी अधिक कड़ी मेहनत आप करेंगे, उतने ही भाग्यशाली आप बनेंगे।
- ✔ The less you speak, the more you understand. — जितना कम आप बोलेंगे, उतना ही अधिक आप समझेंगे।
- ✔ The older we grow, the wiser we become. — जैसे-जैसे हम उम्रदराज होते हैं, हम उतने ही समझदार होते जाते हैं।
- ✔ The greater the risk, the higher the reward. — जितना बड़ा जोखिम होगा, उतना ही बड़ा पुरस्कार होगा।
आम गलती
- ✘ Higher you go, cooler you feel.
- ✔ The higher you go, the cooler you feel. (समानांतर तुलना में दोनों तरफ comparative degree से पहले 'the' होना जरूरी है।)
- ✘ The more he earns, more he spends.
- ✔ The more he earns, the more he spends. (दूसरे हिस्से में 'more' के पहले 'the' छोड़ दिया गया था, जो व्याकरण की दृष्टि से गलत है।)
💡 तराजु के दोनों पलड़े बराबर रखो: अगर पहले हिस्से में 'The + Comparative' है, तो दूसरे हिस्से में भी 'The + Comparative' ही आएगा। Double Comparative rule: Check both sides for 'The + Comparative'.
नियम 4: समानता दर्शाने वाली तुलना (as... as तथा not so/as... as)
- ✔ Rohan is as tall as his father. — रोहन उतना ही लंबा है जितने उसके पिता।
- ✔ This mobile is as expensive as that laptop. — यह मोबाइल उस लैपटॉप जितना ही महँगा है।
- ✔ Mohan is not as fast as Sohan. — मोहन सोहन जितना तेज़ नहीं है।
- ✔ This village is not so dirty as that town. — यह गाँव उस शहर जितना गंदा नहीं है।
- ✔ She sang as sweetly as a nightingale. — उसने कोयल की तरह मधुर गाया।
- ✔ The tea is not so hot as I like it. — चाय उतनी गर्म नहीं है जितनी मुझे पसंद है।
- ✔ He is as honest as his brother. — वह उतना ही ईमानदार है जितना उसका भाई।
आम गलती
- ✘ Ramesh is as taller as Suresh.
- ✔ Ramesh is as tall as Suresh. ('as... as' के बीच कभी Comparative Degree (taller) नहीं आती, केवल Positive Degree (tall) आती है।)
- ✘ He is so brave as a lion.
- ✔ He is as brave as a lion. (सकारात्मक (Affirmative) वाक्यों में 'so... as' का प्रयोग गलत होता है, वहाँ केवल 'as... as' आता है।)
💡 'as... as' भाई-भाई (Positive & Negative दोनों में), पर 'so... as' सिर्फ नापसंद करता है (केवल Negative में)। बीच में हमेशा बेस रूप (Positive degree) रखें। Affirmative = strictly as...as; Negative = as...as or so...as.
एक नज़र में (Revision)
- समान गुणों की तुलना करें: एकवचन के लिए 'than that of' और बहुवचन के लिए 'than those of' लगाएं।
- उसी समूह में तुलना करने पर 'Comparative + than any other + Singular Noun' का ढाँचा अपनाएं।
- 'as... as' और 'so... as' के बीच सदैव Positive Degree (मूल रूप) ही आती है, Comparative या Superlative नहीं।

English version — Adjective: Rules of Comparison (than that of, than any other)
Comparison in English grammar requires comparing like with like, which confuses many candidates who translate directly from Hindi. In English, you cannot compare a person's property directly with another person or place. Exam boards like SSC and Railways regularly test rules involving 'that of/those of', 'than any other', 'the + comparative', and 'as... as' constructs.
Rule 1: Compare Like with Like (than that of / than those of)
A comparison must always be logical and made between two identical attributes or things. When comparing a feature of one entity to that of another, use 'that of' for a singular noun and 'those of' for a plural noun to prevent noun repetition. Formula: Singular: [Noun 1] is [Comparative] than that of [Noun 2]; Plural: [Noun 1] are [Comparative] than those of [Noun 2].
Examples
Common mistakes
- ✘ The climate of Ranchi is better than Patna.
- ✔ The climate of Ranchi is better than that of Patna. (Ranchi's climate is being incorrectly compared to the entire city of Patna instead of Patna's climate.)
- ✘ The mangoes of Malihabad are sweeter than Ratnagiri.
- ✔ The mangoes of Malihabad are sweeter than those of Ratnagiri. (Since 'mangoes' is plural, 'those of' must be used to refer back to them.)
Rule 2: Exclusion from the Same Group (than any other)
When comparing a person or thing with other members of the same group or class using a comparative degree, 'other' must be added after 'any' to exclude the subject being compared. Omitting 'other' means the subject is being compared with itself. Pattern: Subject + Comparative + than any other + Singular Noun.
Examples
- ✔ Iron is more useful than any other metal. — लोहा किसी भी अन्य धातु से अधिक उपयोगी है।
- ✔ Virat is more consistent than any other batsman in the team. — विराट टीम के किसी भी अन्य बल्लेबाज की तुलना में अधिक निरंतर हैं।
- ✔ The Ganga is longer than any other river in India. — गंगा भारत की किसी भी अन्य नदी से अधिक लंबी है।
- ✔ Gold is more precious than any other metal. — सोना किसी भी अन्य धातु से अधिक कीमती है।
- ✔ Priya is more intelligent than any other girl in her class. — प्रिया अपनी कक्षा की किसी भी अन्य लड़की से अधिक बुद्धिमान है।
- ✔ Neem is more bitter than any other leaf. — नीम किसी भी अन्य पत्ते से अधिक कड़वा होता है।
- ✔ English is more widely spoken than any other language in the world. — अंग्रेज़ी दुनिया की किसी भी अन्य भाषा से अधिक व्यापक रूप से बोली जाती है।
Common mistakes
- ✘ Kalidasa was greater than any poet of Sanskrit.
- ✔ Kalidasa was greater than any other poet of Sanskrit. (Kalidasa was himself a Sanskrit poet, so he must be excluded from the group using 'other'.)
- ✘ She runs faster than any other girls in school.
- ✔ She runs faster than any other girl in school. (After 'any other', the noun must be singular, so use 'girl' instead of 'girls'.)
Rule 3: Parallel Increase or Decrease (The + Comparative ..., The + Comparative ...)
When two related situations increase or decrease in proportion to each other, both clauses begin with 'The + Comparative Adjective/Adverb'. Even though 'the' is usually reserved for superlatives, this parallel construction demands 'the' before both comparatives. Pattern: The + Comparative ..., the + Comparative ...
Examples
- ✔ The higher you climb, the colder it gets. — जितना ऊँचा आप चढ़ेंगे, उतनी ही अधिक ठंड होगी।
- ✔ The more you practice, the better you become. — जितना अधिक आप अभ्यास करेंगे, उतने ही बेहतर आप बनेंगे।
- ✔ The sooner we leave, the earlier we will arrive. — जितनी जल्दी हम निकलेंगे, उतनी जल्दी हम पहुँचेंगे।
- ✔ The harder you work, the luckier you get. — जितनी अधिक कड़ी मेहनत आप करेंगे, उतने ही भाग्यशाली आप बनेंगे।
- ✔ The less you speak, the more you understand. — जितना कम आप बोलेंगे, उतना ही अधिक आप समझेंगे।
- ✔ The older we grow, the wiser we become. — जैसे-जैसे हम उम्रदराज होते हैं, हम उतने ही समझदार होते जाते हैं।
- ✔ The greater the risk, the higher the reward. — जितना बड़ा जोखिम होगा, उतना ही बड़ा पुरस्कार होगा।
Common mistakes
- ✘ Higher you go, cooler you feel.
- ✔ The higher you go, the cooler you feel. (In parallel comparison clauses, both comparatives must take the definite article 'the'.)
- ✘ The more he earns, more he spends.
- ✔ The more he earns, the more he spends. (The second comparative degree 'more' must also be preceded by 'the'.)
Rule 4: Equative Comparison (as... as and not so/as... as)
To express equal degree of comparison, use 'as + Positive Degree + as' in both affirmative and negative sentences. However, 'so + Positive Degree + as' is strictly restricted to negative sentences. Crucially, always use the positive (base) degree of the adjective between the two conjunctions, never the comparative. Pattern: as/so + Positive Degree Adjective + as.
Examples
Common mistakes
- ✘ Ramesh is as taller as Suresh.
- ✔ Ramesh is as tall as Suresh. ('as... as' always encloses the base/positive degree of an adjective, never the comparative form.)
- ✘ He is so brave as a lion.
- ✔ He is as brave as a lion. (The structure 'so... as' is used only in negative sentences; affirmative sentences require 'as... as'.)
Quick revision
- Always compare like with like: use 'than that of' for singular nouns and 'than those of' for plural nouns.
- When comparing within the same group, use 'comparative + than any other + singular noun' to exclude the subject.
- Do not use 'other' if the comparison is between two completely different categories or groups.
- In parallel changes, use 'the + comparative' in both the leading clause and the result clause.
- The 'as + positive + as' construction is valid in both affirmative and negative sentences.
- The 'so + positive + as' construction can only be used in negative sentences.
- Never place a comparative or superlative adjective inside 'as... as' or 'so... as'; only use the positive degree.
