englishAdjectiveLinking Verbs और Adjectives का प्रयोग
Linking Verbs and Order of Adjectives
Formula: Subject + Linking Verb + Adjective
उदाहरण
- ✔ The rose smells sweet. — गुलाब की खुशबू मीठी है।
- ✔ This soup tastes delicious. — यह सूप स्वाद में बहुत अच्छा है।
- ✔ The music sounds loud. — संगीत तेज सुनाई दे रहा है।
- ✔ She looks happy today. — वह आज खुश दिख रही है।
- ✔ I feel bad about the mistake. — मुझे गलती के बारे में बुरा लग रहा है।
- ✔ The sky grew dark suddenly. — आसमान अचानक काला (अंधेरा) हो गया।
- ✔ The milk turned sour. — दूध खट्टा हो गया।
- ✔ He became famous after the movie. — फिल्म के बाद वह प्रसिद्ध हो गया।
आम गलती
- ✘ The mango tastes sweetly.
- ✔ The mango tastes sweet. (Tastes एक linking verb है, इसलिए इसके बाद adjective (sweet) आएगा, adverb (sweetly) नहीं।)
💡 अगर आप verb की जगह 'is/am/are' लगाकर देखें और वाक्य का अर्थ सही निकले, तो समझ लें कि वहाँ Adjective ही आएगा। जैसे: The rose is sweet (सही है)।
नियम 2: Action Verb बनाम Linking Verb का फर्क
जब look, feel, या smell का प्रयोग किसी काम (Action) को करने के लिए होता है, तब Adverb का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
उदाहरण के लिए: 'He looked angry' (वह गुस्से में दिखा - स्थिति) लेकिन 'He looked angrily at me' (उसने मेरी तरफ गुस्से से देखा - काम)।
उदाहरण
- ✔ The dog smelled the food hungrily. — कुत्ते ने खाने को भूख के साथ सूंघा (यहाँ सूंघना एक क्रिया है)।
- ✔ The doctor felt the patient's pulse carefully. — डॉक्टर ने मरीज की नब्ज को सावधानी से महसूस किया।
- ✔ She looked at the map confusedly. — उसने नक्शे को उलझन के साथ देखा।
- ✔ The chef tasted the soup cautiously. — शेफ ने सावधानी से सूप चखा।
- ✔ He sounds the bell loudly every morning. — वह हर सुबह जोर से घंटी बजाता है।
- ✔ I looked closely at the signature. — मैंने हस्ताक्षर को करीब से देखा।
आम गलती
- ✘ He looked quick at the car.
- ✔ He looked quickly at the car. (यहाँ 'देखना' एक काम है, इसलिए adverb (quickly) की जरूरत है।)
💡 अगर क्रिया के बाद 'at' या 'the' लगा हो, तो वह अक्सर Action Verb होती है और Adverb लेती है।
नियम 3: Adjectives का सही क्रम (Order)
जब एक ही संज्ञा (Noun) के लिए कई Adjectives आएं, तो उनका एक खास क्रम होता है: Opinion (राय) -> Size (आकार) -> Age (उम्र) -> Colour (रंग) -> Origin (कहाँ का है)।
Formula: Opinion + Size + Age + Colour + Origin + Noun
उदाहरण
- ✔ She has beautiful long black hair. — उसके सुंदर लंबे काले बाल हैं। (Opinion-Size-Colour)
- ✔ I bought a small old Indian lamp. — मैंने एक छोटा पुराना भारतीय लैंप खरीदा। (Size-Age-Origin)
- ✔ It is a lovely large round table. — यह एक प्यारी बड़ी गोल मेज है।
- ✔ He wears an expensive new Italian suit. — वह एक महंगा नया इतालवी सूट पहनता है।
- ✔ We saw a big ancient stone temple. — हमने एक बड़ा प्राचीन पत्थर का मंदिर देखा।
- ✔ They live in a beautiful small white house. — वे एक सुंदर छोटे सफेद घर में रहते हैं।
आम गलती
- ✘ She has black long hair.
- ✔ She has long black hair. (Size (long) हमेशा Colour (black) से पहले आता है।)
- ✘ An Indian old man.
- ✔ An old Indian man. (Age (old) हमेशा Origin (Indian) से पहले आता है।)
💡 इसे याद रखने के लिए 'OSAC-O' (ओसाको) शब्द याद रखें: O(pinion), S(ize), A(ge), C(olour), O(rigin).
एक नज़र में (Revision)
- Linking verbs (look, feel, smell, sound, taste) के बाद हमेशा Adjective लगाएं।
- Become, grow और turn के बाद भी Adjective का ही प्रयोग करें।
- अगर क्रिया कोई शारीरिक काम (Action) दिखा रही है, तब Adverb का प्रयोग करें।
- Adjectives का क्रम: Opinion > Size > Age > Colour > Origin होता है।
- कभी भी 'smells sweetly' या 'feels happily' न कहें, यह गलत है।
- एग्जाम में 'long black hair' को 'black long hair' लिखकर गलती दी जाती है।

English version — Linking Verbs and Order of Adjectives
In English, most verbs are modified by adverbs, but 'Linking Verbs' describe the subject and must be followed by an adjective. Students often mistakenly use an adverb because it sounds correct in translation. This lesson covers these special verbs and the correct order of multiple adjectives in a sentence.
Rule 1: Adjectives after Linking Verbs
Verbs of perception or state like look, feel, smell, taste, and sound describe the subject's state rather than an action. Therefore, they require an adjective to complete the meaning, not an adverb.
Examples
- ✔ The rose smells sweet. — गुलाब की खुशबू मीठी है।
- ✔ This soup tastes delicious. — यह सूप स्वाद में बहुत अच्छा है।
- ✔ The music sounds loud. — संगीत तेज सुनाई दे रहा है।
- ✔ She looks happy today. — वह आज खुश दिख रही है।
- ✔ I feel bad about the mistake. — मुझे गलती के बारे में बुरा लग रहा है।
- ✔ The sky grew dark suddenly. — आसमान अचानक काला (अंधेरा) हो गया।
- ✔ The milk turned sour. — दूध खट्टा हो गया।
- ✔ He became famous after the movie. — फिल्म के बाद वह प्रसिद्ध हो गया।
Common mistakes
- ✘ The mango tastes sweetly.
- ✔ The mango tastes sweet. (Tastes is a linking verb, so it must be followed by an adjective (sweet), not an adverb (sweetly).)
Rule 2: Action Verb vs. Linking Verb
When verbs like look, feel, or smell are used to describe a physical action rather than a state, they take an adverb. Use an adjective for 'how someone is' and an adverb for 'how someone does something'.
Examples
- ✔ The dog smelled the food hungrily. — कुत्ते ने खाने को भूख के साथ सूंघा (यहाँ सूंघना एक क्रिया है)।
- ✔ The doctor felt the patient's pulse carefully. — डॉक्टर ने मरीज की नब्ज को सावधानी से महसूस किया।
- ✔ She looked at the map confusedly. — उसने नक्शे को उलझन के साथ देखा।
- ✔ The chef tasted the soup cautiously. — शेफ ने सावधानी से सूप चखा।
- ✔ He sounds the bell loudly every morning. — वह हर सुबह जोर से घंटी बजाता है।
- ✔ I looked closely at the signature. — मैंने हस्ताक्षर को करीब से देखा।
Common mistakes
- ✘ He looked quick at the car.
- ✔ He looked quickly at the car. (Here 'looked' is an action verb, so it requires the adverb 'quickly'.)
Rule 3: Order of Adjectives
When using multiple adjectives before a noun, follow the OSAC-O sequence: Opinion, Size, Age, Colour, and Origin. This is a common area for error-spotting questions in exams.
Examples
- ✔ She has beautiful long black hair. — उसके सुंदर लंबे काले बाल हैं। (Opinion-Size-Colour)
- ✔ I bought a small old Indian lamp. — मैंने एक छोटा पुराना भारतीय लैंप खरीदा। (Size-Age-Origin)
- ✔ It is a lovely large round table. — यह एक प्यारी बड़ी गोल मेज है।
- ✔ He wears an expensive new Italian suit. — वह एक महंगा नया इतालवी सूट पहनता है।
- ✔ We saw a big ancient stone temple. — हमने एक बड़ा प्राचीन पत्थर का मंदिर देखा।
- ✔ They live in a beautiful small white house. — वे एक सुंदर छोटे सफेद घर में रहते हैं।
Common mistakes
- ✘ She has black long hair.
- ✔ She has long black hair. (Size (long) must always precede Colour (black) in the adjective order.)
- ✘ An Indian old man.
- ✔ An old Indian man. (Age (old) must come before Origin (Indian) according to the rule.)
Quick revision
- Always use an Adjective after linking verbs like look, feel, smell, sound, and taste.
- Verbs like become, grow, and turn also take adjectives to describe a change in state.
- Use an adverb only if the verb describes a physical action (e.g., looking carefully).
- Follow the OSAC-O order: Opinion, Size, Age, Colour, Origin.
- Common errors include using 'sweetly' or 'badly' after linking verbs.
- Watch out for jumbled adjective order like 'black long hair' in error-spotting.
