Adverb: Correct Usage of Very, Much, Too, Enough, and So

नियम 1: Very और Much का अंतर (Degrees और Participles के साथ)

Very का प्रयोग Positive Degree के विशेषण (Adjective) और Present Participle (V1 + ing) के साथ होता है। Much का प्रयोग Comparative Degree और Past Participle (V3) के साथ होता है।

सूत्र: Very + Positive Degree / V-ing; Much + Comparative Degree / V3.

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 Ing वाले Adjective के पहले Very लगाइए और 3rd form (ed/en) वाले Adjective के पहले Much लगाइए। Comparative Degree दिखने पर केवल Much चुनिए। जैसे: Very interesting, Much shocked, Much faster। (अपवाद: Tired, pleased, dejected के साथ बोलचाल में Very भी चलता है, पर परीक्षा में 'Much shocked/surprised' ही सुरक्षित है।)

नियम 2: Too बनाम Very (Too का नकारात्मक भाव)

Very का अर्थ होता है 'बहुत अधिक' (उच्च मात्रा में), जो सामान्य या सकारात्मक बात के लिए आता है। Too का अर्थ होता है 'आवश्यकता या सीमा से अधिक' (more than enough/undesirable), जो नकारात्मक भाव देता है। Too का प्रयोग कभी भी साधारण प्रशंसा के लिए नहीं करना चाहिए।

सूत्र: Too + Adjective + to + V1 (इतना अधिक कि कार्य संभव न हो सके)।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 यदि आगे 'to + V1' की रुकावट न हो और केवल तारीफ करनी हो, तो 'Too' न लगाएं, 'Very' लगाएं। जैसे: 'You are very kind' सही है, 'You are too kind' औपचारिकता के अलावा परीक्षा में गलत माना जाता है।

Positive Adjective + Enough; Enough + Noun.

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 याद रखें फॉर्मूला: 'Adj + Enough' और 'Enough + Noun'। जैसे: Tall enough (लंबा काफी है), लेकिन Enough water (काफी पानी)।

नियम 4: So बनाम Such (So + Adjective बनाम Such + Noun)

So का प्रयोग अकेले Adjective या Adverb से पहले तीव्रता दिखाने के लिए किया जाता है (प्रायः परिणाम दर्शाने वाले 'that' के साथ)। Such का प्रयोग तब होता है जब आगे Noun या Noun Phrase (a/an + Adjective + Noun) मौजूद हो।

सूत्र: So + Adjective/Adverb (+ that...); Such + (a/an) + Adjective + Noun (+ that...).

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 अगर Adjective के ठीक बाद Noun बैठा है तो 'Such' लाएं, अगर Adjective अकेला है तो 'So' लाएं। जैसे: So cold, लेकिन Such a cold night!

  1. (क) very
  2. (ख) too

English version — Adverb: Correct Usage of Very, Much, Too, Enough, and So

Hindi speakers often translate the single word 'bahut' into English without realizing that Very, Much, Too, and So have distinct grammatical rules. In exams like SSC and Railway, questions frequently test their placement with adjectives, participles, and nouns. Mastering these specific differences will help you avoid common error-spotting and sentence-improvement traps.

Rule 1: Difference Between Very and Much (With Degrees and Participles)

Use 'very' with positive degree adjectives and present participles (verb + -ing acting as an adjective). Use 'much' with comparative degree adjectives and past participles (verb 3rd form acting as an adjective).

Pattern: Very + Positive Degree / V-ing; Much + Comparative Degree / V3.

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 2: Too vs Very (The Negative Sense of Too)

'Very' simply intensifies a quality in a positive or neutral sense. 'Too' means 'more than required' or 'excessively', and carries an undesirable or negative sense. Do not use 'too' just to mean 'very' when expressing praise or general high degree.

Pattern: Too + Adjective + to + V1 (so excessively that it prevents the action).

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 3: Placement of Enough (After Adjective/Adverb, Before Noun)

'Enough' means sufficient. When qualifying an adjective or adverb, it is placed immediately after that word. When functioning with a noun, it is placed before the noun. Also, always use the positive degree of the adjective with 'enough'.

Pattern: Positive Adjective/Adverb + Enough; Enough + Noun.

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 4: So vs Such (So + Adjective vs Such + Noun)

Use 'so' directly before a lone adjective or adverb to show intensity (often leading to a 'that' result clause). Use 'such' before a noun or an adjective followed by a noun.

Pattern: So + Adjective/Adverb (+ that...); Such + (a/an) + Adjective + Noun (+ that...).
