Adverb: Confusing Pairs and Time Expressions
अंग्रेजी में कुछ Adverbs के रूप एक जैसे दिखते हैं पर उनके अर्थ अलग होते हैं। हिंदी माध्यम के छात्र अक्सर 'Hard' और 'Hardly' या 'Ago' और 'Before' में गलती करते हैं। SSC और Railway की परीक्षाओं में इन शब्दों के गलत प्रयोग पर आधारित Error Spotting के सवाल खूब पूछे जाते हैं।
नियम 1: Hard vs Hardly
Hard का अर्थ है 'मेहनती' या 'कठिन'। Hardly एक negative शब्द है जिसका अर्थ है 'मुश्किल से' या 'ना के बराबर'।
उदाहरण
- ✔ He works hard to support his family. — वह अपने परिवार का भरण-पोषण करने के लिए कड़ी मेहनत करता है।
- ✔ The exam paper was very hard. — परीक्षा का प्रश्न पत्र बहुत कठिन था।
- ✔ I hardly know him. — मैं उसे मुश्किल से ही जानता हूँ।
- ✔ There is hardly any water in the tank. — टैंक में ना के बराबर पानी है।
- ✔ He hardly ever goes to the cinema. — वह शायद ही कभी सिनेमा जाता है।
आम गलती
- ✘ He works hardly all day.
- ✔ He works hard all day. (Hardly का अर्थ नकारात्मक है, यहाँ मेहनत की बात हो रही है इसलिए Hard आएगा।)
💡 अगर आप शब्द को 'not' से बदल सकें तो 'hardly' का प्रयोग करें, वरना 'hard' का।
नियम 2: Late vs Lately
Late का अर्थ है 'देर' या 'देर से'। Lately का अर्थ है 'हाल ही में' (Recently)।
उदाहरण
- ✔ Don't be late for the class. — क्लास के लिए देर मत करो।
- ✔ I have been busy lately. — मैं हाल ही में व्यस्त रहा हूँ।
- ✔ He arrived late for the meeting. — वह मीटिंग में देर से पहुँचा।
- ✔ Have you seen him lately? — क्या तुमने हाल ही में उसे देखा है?
- ✔ The bus was late due to rain. — बारिश के कारण बस देर से थी।
आम गलती
- ✘ I have not seen him late.
- ✔ I have not seen him lately. (यहाँ 'हाल ही में' का भाव है, इसलिए Lately आएगा।)
💡 Lately का मतलब है 'हाल ही में', Late का मतलब है 'समय के बाद'।
नियम 3: Ago vs Before
Ago का प्रयोग वर्तमान से पीछे जाने के लिए होता है (Past Simple)। Before का प्रयोग किसी बीते हुए समय के संदर्भ में होता है (Past Perfect)।
उदाहरण
- ✔ I met him two years ago. — मैं उससे दो साल पहले मिला था।
- ✔ He had finished the work before I came. — मेरे आने से पहले उसने काम पूरा कर लिया था।
- ✔ She left an hour ago. — वह एक घंटे पहले निकली।
- ✔ They had reached before the sunset. — वे सूर्यास्त से पहले पहुँच चुके थे।
- ✔ I saw that movie long ago. — मैंने वह फिल्म बहुत पहले देखी थी।
आम गलती
- ✘ I have seen him two years ago.
- ✔ I saw him two years ago. (Ago के साथ हमेशा Past Simple (V2) आता है, Present Perfect नहीं।)
💡 Ago का मतलब है 'आज से इतना पीछे', Before का मतलब है 'किसी पास्ट इवेंट से पहले'।
नियम 4: Hardly/Scarcely का जोड़ा
Hardly या Scarcely के साथ हमेशा 'when' या 'before' आता है, 'than' नहीं। वाक्य की शुरुआत इनसे होने पर Inversion (Helping Verb + Subject) का प्रयोग होता है।
उदाहरण
- ✔ Hardly had I reached when the train left. — मैं मुश्किल से पहुँचा ही था कि ट्रेन चल दी।
- ✔ Scarcely had he spoken when the lights went out. — वह मुश्किल से बोला ही था कि बत्तियाँ बुझ गईं।
- ✔ Hardly had the meeting started when he left. — मीटिंग मुश्किल से शुरू ही हुई थी कि वह चला गया।
- ✔ Scarcely had I slept when the phone rang. — मैं मुश्किल से सो पाया था कि फोन बज गया।
- ✔ Hardly had they eaten when guests arrived. — उन्होंने मुश्किल से खाना खाया ही था कि मेहमान आ गए।
आम गलती
- ✘ Hardly had I seen him than he ran away.
- ✔ Hardly had I seen him when he ran away. (Hardly के साथ 'than' नहीं 'when' आता है।)
💡 याद रखें: Hardly...when (जोड़ा याद रखें)।

English version — Adverb: Confusing Pairs and Time Expressions
In English, some adverbs look similar but have completely different meanings. Hindi-medium students often confuse pairs like 'Hard/Hardly' or 'Ago/Before'. SSC and Railway exams frequently test these through error spotting and sentence improvement questions.
Rule 1: Hard vs Hardly
Hard means 'diligent' or 'difficult'. Hardly is a negative adverb meaning 'scarcely' or 'almost not'.
Examples
- ✔ He works hard to support his family. — वह अपने परिवार का भरण-पोषण करने के लिए कड़ी मेहनत करता है।
- ✔ The exam paper was very hard. — परीक्षा का प्रश्न पत्र बहुत कठिन था।
- ✔ I hardly know him. — मैं उसे मुश्किल से ही जानता हूँ।
- ✔ There is hardly any water in the tank. — टैंक में ना के बराबर पानी है।
- ✔ He hardly ever goes to the cinema. — वह शायद ही कभी सिनेमा जाता है।
Common mistakes
- ✘ He works hardly all day.
- ✔ He works hard all day. (Hardly is negative; here we need the positive sense of 'hard work'.)
💡 If you can replace the word with 'not', use 'hardly'. Otherwise, use 'hard'.
Rule 2: Late vs Lately
Late means 'not on time'. Lately means 'recently'.
Examples
- ✔ Don't be late for the class. — क्लास के लिए देर मत करो।
- ✔ I have been busy lately. — मैं हाल ही में व्यस्त रहा हूँ।
- ✔ He arrived late for the meeting. — वह मीटिंग में देर से पहुँचा।
- ✔ Have you seen him lately? — क्या तुमने हाल ही में उसे देखा है?
- ✔ The bus was late due to rain. — बारिश के कारण बस देर से थी।
Common mistakes
- ✘ I have not seen him late.
- ✔ I have not seen him lately. (We need the sense of 'recently', so use 'lately'.)
💡 Lately = Recently. Late = Not on time.
Rule 3: Ago vs Before
Ago is used for time counted back from now (Past Simple). Before is used for time relative to a past point (Past Perfect).
Examples
- ✔ I met him two years ago. — मैं उससे दो साल पहले मिला था।
- ✔ He had finished the work before I came. — मेरे आने से पहले उसने काम पूरा कर लिया था।
- ✔ She left an hour ago. — वह एक घंटे पहले निकली।
- ✔ They had reached before the sunset. — वे सूर्यास्त से पहले पहुँच चुके थे।
- ✔ I saw that movie long ago. — मैंने वह फिल्म बहुत पहले देखी थी।
Common mistakes
- ✘ I have seen him two years ago.
- ✔ I saw him two years ago. (Ago requires Past Simple tense, not Present Perfect.)
💡 Ago = Count back from NOW. Before = Count back from THEN.
Rule 4: The pair of Hardly/Scarcely
Hardly/Scarcely is always followed by 'when' or 'before', never 'than'. Use inversion (Helping Verb before Subject) if starting with these.
Examples
- ✔ Hardly had I reached when the train left. — मैं मुश्किल से पहुँचा ही था कि ट्रेन चल दी।
- ✔ Scarcely had he spoken when the lights went out. — वह मुश्किल से बोला ही था कि बत्तियाँ बुझ गईं।
- ✔ Hardly had the meeting started when he left. — मीटिंग मुश्किल से शुरू ही हुई थी कि वह चला गया।
- ✔ Scarcely had I slept when the phone rang. — मैं मुश्किल से सो पाया था कि फोन बज गया।
- ✔ Hardly had they eaten when guests arrived. — उन्होंने मुश्किल से खाना खाया ही था कि मेहमान आ गए।
Common mistakes
- ✘ Hardly had I seen him than he ran away.
- ✔ Hardly had I seen him when he ran away. (Hardly takes 'when', not 'than'.)
💡 Hardly/Scarcely + had + Subject + V3 + when + Past Simple.
Quick revision
- Hard means diligent/difficult; Hardly means almost not.
- Late refers to time; Lately means recently.
- Use Ago with Past Simple (V2).
- Use Before with Past Perfect (Had + V3).
- Hardly/Scarcely must be followed by 'when' or 'before'.
- Avoid double negatives with Hardly.
