Present Simple और Present Continuous तथा Stative Verbs का अंतर

Present Simple vs Present Continuous and Stative Verbs

Present Simple

(If you see permanent facts or daily habits, stick to V1 or V1+s/es.)

Rule 2: वर्तमान में जारी काम (Temporary Action) के लिए Present Continuous

जो काम बोलते समय या वर्तमान में जारी (Ongoing) हो, उसके लिए Present Continuous (is/am/are + V1+ing) का प्रयोग होता है। इसका फॉर्मूला है: Subject + is/am/are + V1+ing। हिंदी में इसके अंत में 'रहा है, रही है, रहे हैं' आता है।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 'Now', 'Look', 'Listen' जैसे शब्द दिखें तो समझ लें कि वहाँ is/am/are + V1+ing आएगा। (Words like 'now', 'look', 'listen' often signal Present Continuous.)

Rule 3: Stative Verbs के साथ -ing का प्रयोग नहीं होता

भावना (Emotion), सोच (Thought), ज्ञान (Mind) और अधिकार (Possession) दिखाने वाली वर्ब्स (जैसे know, understand, belong, want, love, own) Stative Verbs कहलाती हैं। इनका -ing फॉर्म (Continuous Tense) नहीं बनता है। परीक्षा में 'I am knowing' या 'It is belonging' लिखकर बहुत गलती दी जाती है।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 जिसे आप शारीरिक रूप से लगातार 'कर' नहीं सकते (जैसे जानना या मालिक होना), उसमें कभी -ing मत लगाइए। (If you cannot physically 'do' the action with your muscles continuously, never use -ing with it.)

(Check if the verb shows pure possession versus an active event.)

English version — Present Simple vs Present Continuous and Stative Verbs

This topic covers when to use Present Simple versus Present Continuous, and introduces Stative verbs which cannot take the '-ing' form. Hindi-medium students often translate 'raha hai' literally, leading to major errors with verbs of possession and thinking. SSC and Railway exams frequently test these exact verb traps in error-spotting.

Rule 1: Present Simple for Habits and Facts

Use Present Simple (V1 or V1+s/es) for daily routines, habits, universal truths, and permanent facts. Do not use continuous tense for permanent situations. Formula: Subject + V1 / V1+s/es.

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 2: Present Continuous for Temporary Actions

Use Present Continuous (is/am/are + V1+ing) for actions happening right now at the time of speaking or temporary actions. Formula: Subject + is/am/are + V1+ing.

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 3: Stative Verbs Cannot Take -ing

Verbs of perception, thought, emotion, and possession (like know, understand, believe, want, love, hate, belong, own, possess, hear, see) describe a state, not an action. They cannot be used in continuous tenses. If you write 'I am knowing him', it is completely wrong; use 'I know him'.

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 4: Action Use of Stative Verbs

Some stative verbs can take '-ing' when they change their meaning to an action or experience. For example, 'have' means possession (stative, no -ing), but 'having' means eating, drinking, or experiencing (takes -ing). Similarly, 'see' means meeting or consulting.
