SSC और रेलवे परीक्षाओं में इनसे संबंधित Error Spotting और Fill in the blanks के प्रश्न लगातार पूछे जाते हैं।

Rule 1: It is time / It is high time / It is about time के नियम

जब किसी काम को करने का सही समय पहले ही निकल चुका हो और अब तुरंत करना जरूरी हो, तब 'It is high time' या 'It is time' का प्रयोग होता है। यदि इनके तुरंत बाद कोई कर्ता (Subject) आए, तो क्रिया हमेशा Past Simple यानी V2 रूप में आती है (Subject + V2)। यदि इनके बाद कोई कर्ता न हो, तो 'to + V1' या 'for + noun/pronoun + to + V1' का प्रयोग होता है। इसमें कभी भी 'should + V1' या 'V1' का प्रयोग न करें।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 सूत्र याद रखें: It is high time + Subject = V2 (भूतकाल)। हिंदी अर्थ 'चाहिए' जैसा लगे तब भी 'should' नहीं लगाना है। Formula: It is high time + Subject + V2 (Past Simple). Never use 'should' here even if the Hindi translation suggests advice.

Rule 2: Would rather

Quick Rule: Would rather + V1 (direct verb) BUT Would rather + Subject + V2.

Rule 3: Had better + Bare Infinitive (V1)

Remember: 'Had better' acts like a modal auxiliary and takes pure V1 without 'to'.

Rule 4: Wish के साथ Past Simple और Past Perfect का नियम

'Wish' ऐसी इच्छाओं के लिए आता है जो पूरी नहीं हैं। वर्तमान (Present) की अवास्तविक इच्छा के लिए 'Wish + Past Simple (V2)' आता है, और Be verb के रूप में सभी Subjects के साथ 'were' लगता है ('was' नहीं)। भूतकाल (Past) के किसी पछतावे (regret) को व्यक्त करने के लिए 'Wish + Past Perfect (had + V3)' का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 काल्पनिक इच्छा (Wish) में 'was' का प्रयोग वर्जित है; चाहे कर्ता I, He, She हो, हमेशा 'were' लगाएं। Shortcut: With 'wish', present unreal situation demands 'were' or 'V2'; past regret demands 'had + V3'.

Rule 5: As if और As though के साथ काल्पनिक भाव (Subjunctive)

'As if' और 'As though' का अर्थ होता है 'मानो' या 'जैसे कि'। जब इनके द्वारा कोई अवास्तविक या काल्पनिक तुलना की जाए जो सच नहीं है, तो क्रिया हमेशा Past Subjunctive में होती है। 'Be' क्रिया होने पर सभी कर्ताओं के साथ 'were' आता है, और अन्य क्रियाओं के लिए V2 का प्रयोग होता है।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 As if / As though = 'मानो ऐसा हो'। अगर स्थिति काल्पनिक है तो Be verb की जगह हमेशा 'were' चुनिए। Exam Trick: After 'as if' and 'as though', look for 'were' or V2 to signify unreal comparisons.

  1. (क) would rather I studied
  2. (ख) would rather I have studied
  3. (ग) would rather me to study
  4. (घ) No improvement
उत्तर देखें

  1. (क) submitted
  2. (ख) to submit
  3. (ग) should submit
  4. (घ) submitting
उत्तर देखें

उत्तर: (ख) to submit

जब 'It is time + for + object' का ढांचा हो, तो आगे 'to + V1' (to submit) आता है।

भूतकाल के किसी पछतावे (past regret) के लिए 'wish + had + V3' (had listened) बिल्कुल सही व्याकरण है, अतः कोई त्रुटि नहीं है।

English version — Subjunctive and Unreal Past: It is high time, Would rather, Had better, Wish, As if

Certain English expressions express hypothetical situations, wishes, or delayed actions that require unreal past verb forms despite referring to the present. Hindi-medium aspirants often wrongly use present tense verbs or modals like 'should' with these expressions. SSC and Railway exams frequently test these exact structures through sentence improvement and error detection questions.

Rule 1: It is time / It is high time / It is about time + Subject + V2 (or for + object + to-V1)

Expressions like 'It is time', 'It is high time', and 'It is about time' indicate that an action is already delayed and must be taken immediately. When followed by a subject, use the Past Simple form: Subject + V2. If no subject follows, use 'to + V1' or 'for + object + to + V1'. Never use 'should + V1' with these clauses.

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 2: Would rather + V1 (self) vs Would rather + Subject + V2 (another person)

'Would rather' denotes preference. When the subject expresses a personal preference, use a bare infinitive: 'would rather + V1'. When the subject desires that another person do something, use an unreal past clause: 'would rather + Subject + V2'. Always use 'than' (not 'to') for comparisons.

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 3: Had better + V1 (without 'to')

'Had better' gives strong advice or warnings in the present or future, meaning 'ought to'. Despite containing the word 'had', it must be followed strictly by a bare infinitive (V1 without 'to'). Never add 'to' or use past tense verbs directly after 'had better'.

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 4: Wish + Past Simple (unreal present) / Past Perfect (unreal past)

'Wish' expresses hypothetical desires contrary to reality. For present unreal desires, use Past Simple (Subject + V2), and use 'were' for all subjects with the 'be' verb (avoid 'was'). For past regrets about events that already happened or failed to happen, use Past Perfect (had + V3).

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 5: As if / As though + were / V2 (hypothetical comparison)

'As if' and 'As though' mean 'as would be the case if'. When they describe an unreal, imaginary, or contrary-to-fact situation, use the subjunctive mood: use 'were' for the verb 'to be' regardless of the singular or plural subject, and use Past Simple (V2) for action verbs.
