Modals in the Past: Could have, Should have, Would have
1: Should have / Ought to have
Subject + should have + V3.
- ✔ You should have studied for the exam. —
- ✔ I should have told the truth to my father. —
- ✔ We ought to have helped that poor man.
- ✔ She should have reached the station on time.
- ✔ You should not have wasted your time in the village. —
- ✔ The driver should have seen the red light. —
- ✘ I should have help him.
- ✔ I should have helped him.
- ✘ You should had gone there.
- ✔ You should have gone there.
नियम 2: Could have / Might have (अधूरी संभावना)
Subject + could have + V3.
- ✔ He could have won the gold medal. —
- ✔ I could have bought a bigger house last year.
- ✔ They might have missed the train due to traffic. —
- ✔ You could have told me about the problem. —
- ✔ We could have played the match if it hadn't rained. —
- ✔ She could have passed the SSC exam easily.
- ✘ He could have win the race.
- ✔ He could have won the race. (Could have के साथ 'win' (V1) नहीं 'won' (V3) लगेगा।)
- ✘ I could had finished the work.
- ✔ I could have finished the work.
नियम 3: Must have (पक्का अंदाज़ा)
Subject + must have + V3.
- ✔ He is late; he must have missed the bus. —
- ✔ You must have heard about Mahatma Gandhi. —
- ✔ Sima must have read the first five chapters. —
- ✔ The ground is wet; it must have rained last night. —
- ✔ They must have reached Delhi by now.
- ✔ She must have forgotten her keys at home. —
- ✘ She must has reached.
- ✔ She must have reached. (Modal (must) के बाद 'has' कभी नहीं आता, चाहे Subject 'She' ही क्यों न हो।)
- ✘ You must have see the Taj Mahal.
- ✔ You must have seen the Taj Mahal. (Must have के साथ V3 (seen) का प्रयोग करें।)
नियम 4: Would have (काल्पनिक परिणाम)
If + had + V3, Subject + would have + V3.
- ✔ If I had worked hard, I would have passed. —
- ✔ If you had invited me, I would have come.
- ✔ Had he come earlier, he would have met me.
- ✔ If she had played well, she would have won. —
- ✔ But for your help, I would have failed. —
- ✘ If I would have seen him, I would have told him.
- ✔ If I had seen him, I would have told him. ('If' वाले हिस्से में 'would have' नहीं 'had' आता है।)
- ✘ I would have certainly purchase the car.
- ✔ I would have certainly purchased the car.
5: Needn't, Must, Have to
- ✔ You needn't buy a ticket; I have one. —
- ✔ You must follow the traffic rules. —
- ✔ I have to finish this work by evening. —
- ✔ May I come in, Sir? —
- ✔ You needn't have made so much fuss. —
- ✔ You can take my pen for the exam. —
- ✘ You must have to do this.
- ✔ You must do this.
- ✘ He need not to go.
- ✔ He need not go.

English version — Modals in the Past: Could have, Should have, Would have
This topic covers actions that were possible or expected in the past but did not happen, or logical guesses about the past. In SSC and Railway exams, questions focus on the 'Modal + have + V3' structure, where students often make mistakes by using the wrong verb form.
Rule 1: Should have / Ought to have (Regret or Advice)
Use 'should have' or 'ought to have' for actions that were the right thing to do in the past but were not done. It expresses regret or criticism. Formula: Subject + should have + V3.
Examples
- ✔ You should have studied for the exam. —
- ✔ I should have told the truth to my father. —
- ✔ We ought to have helped that poor man.
- ✔ She should have reached the station on time.
- ✔ You should not have wasted your time in the village. —
- ✔ The driver should have seen the red light. —
Common mistakes
- ✘ I should have help him.
- ✔ I should have helped him. (Always use the third form of the verb (V3) after 'have'.)
- ✘ You should had gone there.
- ✔ You should have gone there. (Modals are always followed by 'have', never 'had', even in the past.)
💡 If you see 'should have' in an error-spotting question, immediately check if the next word is V3.
Rule 2: Could have / Might have (Past Possibility)
Use 'could have' or 'might have' to talk about something that was possible in the past but didn't happen. It shows a missed opportunity. Formula: Subject + could have + V3.
Examples
- ✔ He could have won the gold medal. —
- ✔ I could have bought a bigger house last year.
- ✔ They might have missed the train due to traffic. —
- ✔ You could have told me about the problem. —
- ✔ We could have played the match if it hadn't rained. —
- ✔ She could have passed the SSC exam easily.
Common mistakes
- ✘ He could have win the race.
- ✔ He could have won the race. (Use 'won' (V3) instead of 'win' (V1) after could have.)
- ✘ I could had finished the work.
- ✔ I could have finished the work. (Using 'had' with 'could' is grammatically incorrect; always use 'have'.)
💡 'Could have' means 'ability was there but action wasn't taken'.
Rule 3: Must have (Strong Guess)
Use 'must have' when you are almost certain that something happened in the past based on logic or evidence. Formula: Subject + must have + V3.
Examples
- ✔ He is late; he must have missed the bus. —
- ✔ You must have heard about Mahatma Gandhi. —
- ✔ Sima must have read the first five chapters. —
- ✔ The ground is wet; it must have rained last night. —
- ✔ They must have reached Delhi by now.
- ✔ She must have forgotten her keys at home. —
Common mistakes
- ✘ She must has reached.
- ✔ She must have reached. ('Has' never follows a modal; always use 'have' regardless of the subject.)
- ✘ You must have see the Taj Mahal.
- ✔ You must have seen the Taj Mahal. (Always use V3 (seen) after must have.)
💡 Use 'must have' for 90% certainty about a past event.
Rule 4: Would have (Hypothetical Result)
'Would have' is used in third conditional sentences to describe the result of an imaginary past situation. Formula: If + had + V3, Subject + would have + V3.
Examples
- ✔ If I had worked hard, I would have passed. —
- ✔ If you had invited me, I would have come.
- ✔ Had he come earlier, he would have met me.
- ✔ If she had played well, she would have won. —
- ✔ But for your help, I would have failed. —
Common mistakes
- ✘ If I would have seen him, I would have told him.
- ✔ If I had seen him, I would have told him. (Do not use 'would have' in the 'if' clause; use 'had + V3' instead.)
- ✘ I would have certainly purchase the car.
- ✔ I would have certainly purchased the car. ('Would have' must be followed by the past participle (V3).)
💡 Remember the pair: 'Had + V3' in the first part and 'Would have + V3' in the second.
Rule 5: Needn't, Must, Have to (Necessity and Permission)
'Must' shows strong internal necessity, 'Have to' shows external obligation, and 'Needn't' shows lack of necessity. 'Can' and 'May' are used for permission.
Examples
- ✔ You needn't buy a ticket; I have one. —
- ✔ You must follow the traffic rules. —
- ✔ I have to finish this work by evening. —
- ✔ May I come in, Sir? —
- ✔ You needn't have made so much fuss. —
- ✔ You can take my pen for the exam. —
Common mistakes
- ✘ You must have to do this.
- ✔ You must do this. ('Must' and 'Have to' are redundant if used together; use only one.)
- ✘ He need not to go.
- ✔ He need not go. (Do not use 'to' after 'need not' when it acts as a modal.)
💡 'Needn't' is used when there is no compulsion.
