Subject-Verb Agreement (Part 1): Each, Every, Many a and Special Cases
Subject-Verb Agreement का मतलब है कि जैसा कर्ता (Subject) वैसी क्रिया (Verb)। हिंदी माध्यम के छात्र अक्सर उन शब्दों में गलती करते हैं जो देखने में बहुवचन (Plural) लगते हैं पर होते एकवचन (Singular) हैं। SSC और Railway परीक्षाओं में यहाँ से सबसे ज्यादा Error Spotting के सवाल आते हैं।
नियम 1: Each, Every, Many a, No one, Everybody के साथ Singular Verb
जब वाक्य Each, Every, Many a, No one या Everybody से शुरू हो, तो हम एक समय में एक ही व्यक्ति की बात करते हैं। इसलिए इनके साथ हमेशा Singular Verb (जैसे is, has, was, V1+s/es) का प्रयोग होता है। 'Many a' का अर्थ 'बहुत' होता है लेकिन व्याकरण के अनुसार यह Singular माना जाता है।
उदाहरण
- ✔ Each student has a separate desk. — प्रत्येक छात्र के पास एक अलग डेस्क है।
- ✔ Every girl in the class is hardworking. — कक्षा की हर लड़की मेहनती है।
- ✔ Many a man has lost his life in the war. — युद्ध में कई लोगों ने अपनी जान गंवाई है।
- ✔ No one was present in the office yesterday. — कल ऑफिस में कोई मौजूद नहीं था।
- ✔ Everybody wants to get a government job. — हर कोई सरकारी नौकरी पाना चाहता है।
- ✔ Each of the players is performing well. — खिलाड़ियों में से प्रत्येक अच्छा प्रदर्शन कर रहा है।
आम गलती
- ✘ Many a soldiers were killed in the battle.
- ✔ Many a soldier was killed in the battle. (Many a के बाद Noun और Verb दोनों Singular होने चाहिए।)
- ✘ Each of the boys have a pen.
- ✔ Each of the boys has a pen. (Each of के बाद Noun plural होता है लेकिन Verb हमेशा singular (has) आती है।)
💡 याद रखें: Each, Every और Many a 'अकेले' रहना पसंद करते हैं, इसलिए इनके साथ Plural verb कभी न लगाएं।
नियम 2: 'More than one' के साथ Singular Verb
भले ही 'More than one' का अर्थ एक से अधिक हो, लेकिन इसके तुरंत बाद 'one' आने के कारण Noun और Verb दोनों Singular ही रहते हैं। इसका फार्मूला है: More than one + Singular Noun + Singular Verb.
उदाहरण
- ✔ More than one person was injured in the accident. — हादसे में एक से अधिक व्यक्ति घायल हो गया।
- ✔ More than one candidate has applied for this post. — इस पद के लिए एक से अधिक उम्मीदवार ने आवेदन किया है।
- ✔ More than one book is missing from the library. — लाइब्रेरी से एक से अधिक किताब गायब है।
- ✔ More than one student has failed the exam. — एक से अधिक छात्र परीक्षा में फेल हो गया है।
- ✔ More than one room is vacant in this hotel. — इस होटल में एक से अधिक कमरा खाली है।
आम गलती
- ✘ More than one students are absent today.
- ✔ More than one student is absent today. (One के बाद students (plural) और are (plural) का प्रयोग गलत है।)
💡 Noun से ठीक पहले 'one' शब्द पर ध्यान दें, इससे आपको singular verb याद रहेगी।
नियम 3: 'The + Adjective' के साथ Plural Verb
जब किसी Adjective (विशेषण) के पहले 'The' लग जाता है (जैसे The rich, The poor, The honest), तो वह उस पूरे समूह या वर्ग के लोगों को दर्शाता है। यह हमेशा Plural माना जाता है और इसके साथ Plural Verb आती है।
उदाहरण
- ✔ The rich are not always happy. — अमीर लोग हमेशा खुश नहीं होते।
- ✔ The poor are getting poorer every day. — गरीब दिन-ब-दिन और गरीब होते जा रहे हैं।
- ✔ The honest are respected everywhere. — ईमानदार लोगों का हर जगह सम्मान होता है।
- ✔ The blind need our help and support. — दृष्टिबाधित लोगों को हमारी मदद और समर्थन की आवश्यकता है।
- ✔ The young are the future of our country. — युवा हमारे देश का भविष्य हैं।
आम गलती
- ✘ The rich is usually greedy.
- ✔ The rich are usually greedy. (The rich का मतलब 'अमीर लोग' है, इसलिए is की जगह are आएगा।)
💡 'The + Adjective' को 'उस तरह के सभी लोग' के रूप में समझें।
नियम 4: दूरी, समय और राशि (Units) के लिए Singular Verb
जब दूरी (Distance), समय (Time) या धन (Money) को एक इकाई (Unit) या कुल मात्रा के रूप में देखा जाता है, तो Verb हमेशा Singular होती है। भले ही वे देखने में Plural लगें (जैसे Ten miles), पर वे एक निश्चित मात्रा बताते हैं।
उदाहरण
- ✔ Ten kilometres is a long distance to walk. — दस किलोमीटर पैदल चलने के लिए एक लंबी दूरी है।
- ✔ Five thousand rupees is a large sum for him. — पांच हजार रुपये उसके लिए एक बड़ी राशि है।
- ✔ Two hours is enough to finish this task. — इस काम को पूरा करने के लिए दो घंटे काफी हैं।
- ✔ Fifty kilograms is too heavy for me to lift. — पचास किलो मेरे उठाने के लिए बहुत भारी है।
- ✔ Three years is a long time to wait. — तीन साल इंतजार करने के लिए एक लंबा समय है।
आम गलती
- ✘ Ten miles are not a long distance.
- ✔ Ten miles is not a long distance.
- ✔ Physics is my favorite subject. — भौतिकी मेरा पसंदीदा विषय है।
- ✔ Mathematics is difficult for many students. — गणित कई छात्रों के लिए कठिन है।
- ✔ The Arabian Nights is an interesting book. — द अरेबियन नाइट्स एक दिलचस्प किताब है।
- ✔ The news is true. — खबर सच है।
- ✔ Politics is a dirty game. — राजनीति एक गंदा खेल है।
आम गलती
- ✘ Economics are a tough subject.
- ✔ Economics is a tough subject. (Economics एक विषय का नाम है, इसलिए is आएगा।)
💡 अंत में लगे 's' से भ्रमित न हों; नाम हमेशा एकवचन होते हैं।
नियम 6: 'There is/are' का प्रयोग बाद वाले Subject के अनुसार
जब वाक्य 'There' से शुरू होता है, तो Verb उसके बाद आने वाले असली Subject के अनुसार लगती है। अगर बाद वाला शब्द Singular है तो 'is/was', और अगर Plural है तो 'are/were' लगेगा।
उदाहरण
- ✔ There is a big tree near my house. — मेरे घर के पास एक बड़ा पेड़ है।
- ✔ There are many stars in the sky. — आसमान में कई तारे हैं।
- ✔ There was no water in the jug. — जग में पानी नहीं था।
- ✔ There were fifty students in the class. — कक्षा में पचास छात्र थे।
- ✔ There is many a slip between the cup and the lip. — काम पूरा होने से पहले कई बाधाएं आ सकती हैं।
आम गलती
- ✘ There is many mistakes in your essay.
- ✔ There are many mistakes in your essay. (यहाँ असली subject 'mistakes' (plural) है, इसलिए are आएगा।)
💡 असली subject खोजने के लिए हमेशा 'There' शब्द के आगे देखें।
एक नज़र में (Revision)
- Each, Every, Many a, Everybody के साथ हमेशा Singular Verb लगाएं।
- More than one + Singular Noun के साथ Singular Verb आती है।

English version — Subject-Verb Agreement (Part 1): Each, Every, Many a and Special Cases
Subject-Verb Agreement means the verb must match the number of the subject. Hindi-medium students often get confused by words that look plural but take a singular verb. This topic is a favorite for Error Spotting in SSC and Railway exams.
Rule 1: Singular Verb with Each, Every, Many a, No one, Everybody
When a sentence starts with Each, Every, Many a, No one, or Everybody, it refers to individuals one at a time. Therefore, always use a Singular Verb (is, has, was, V1+s/es). 'Many a' means 'many' but is grammatically singular.
Examples
- ✔ Each student has a separate desk. — प्रत्येक छात्र के पास एक अलग डेस्क है।
- ✔ Every girl in the class is hardworking. — कक्षा की हर लड़की मेहनती है।
- ✔ Many a man has lost his life in the war. — युद्ध में कई लोगों ने अपनी जान गंवाई है।
- ✔ No one was present in the office yesterday. — कल ऑफिस में कोई मौजूद नहीं था।
- ✔ Everybody wants to get a government job. — हर कोई सरकारी नौकरी पाना चाहता है।
- ✔ Each of the players is performing well. — खिलाड़ियों में से प्रत्येक अच्छा प्रदर्शन कर रहा है।
Common mistakes
- ✘ Many a soldiers were killed in the battle.
- ✔ Many a soldier was killed in the battle. (Both Noun and Verb must be singular after 'Many a'.)
- ✘ Each of the boys have a pen.
- ✔ Each of the boys has a pen. (After 'Each of', the noun is plural but the verb is always singular.)
💡 Remember: Each, Every, and Many a are 'Single' people; they never like Plural verbs.
Rule 2: Singular Verb with 'More than one'
Even though 'More than one' implies many, the word 'one' dictates the grammar. Formula: More than one + Singular Noun + Singular Verb.
Examples
- ✔ More than one person was injured in the accident. — हादसे में एक से अधिक व्यक्ति घायल हो गया।
- ✔ More than one candidate has applied for this post. — इस पद के लिए एक से अधिक उम्मीदवार ने आवेदन किया है।
- ✔ More than one book is missing from the library. — लाइब्रेरी से एक से अधिक किताब गायब है।
- ✔ More than one student has failed the exam. — एक से अधिक छात्र परीक्षा में फेल हो गया है।
- ✔ More than one room is vacant in this hotel. — इस होटल में एक से अधिक कमरा खाली है।
Common mistakes
- ✘ More than one students are absent today.
- ✔ More than one student is absent today. (Using plural noun and verb after 'one' is incorrect.)
💡 Focus on the word 'one' right before the noun to remember the singular verb.
Rule 3: Plural Verb with 'The + Adjective'
When 'The' is used before an adjective (like The rich, The poor), it represents a whole class of people. It is always plural and takes a Plural Verb.
Examples
- ✔ The rich are not always happy. — अमीर लोग हमेशा खुश नहीं होते।
- ✔ The poor are getting poorer every day. — गरीब दिन-ब-दिन और गरीब होते जा रहे हैं।
- ✔ The honest are respected everywhere. — ईमानदार लोगों का हर जगह सम्मान होता है।
- ✔ The blind need our help and support. — दृष्टिबाधित लोगों को हमारी मदद और समर्थन की आवश्यकता है।
- ✔ The young are the future of our country. — युवा हमारे देश का भविष्य हैं।
Common mistakes
- ✘ The rich is usually greedy.
- ✔ The rich are usually greedy. ('The rich' refers to rich people in general, so use 'are' instead of 'is'.)
💡 Think of 'The + Adjective' as 'All the people of that kind'.
Rule 4: Singular Verb for Distance, Time, and Amount
When distance, time, or money is considered as a single unit or total amount, the verb is always singular, even if the noun looks plural.
Examples
- ✔ Ten kilometres is a long distance to walk. — दस किलोमीटर पैदल चलने के लिए एक लंबी दूरी है।
- ✔ Five thousand rupees is a large sum for him. — पांच हजार रुपये उसके लिए एक बड़ी राशि है।
- ✔ Two hours is enough to finish this task. — इस काम को पूरा करने के लिए दो घंटे काफी हैं।
- ✔ Fifty kilograms is too heavy for me to lift. — पचास किलो मेरे उठाने के लिए बहुत भारी है।
- ✔ Three years is a long time to wait. — तीन साल इंतजार करने के लिए एक लंबा समय है।
Common mistakes
- ✘ Ten miles are not a long distance.
- ✔ Ten miles is not a long distance. (Here 'ten miles' is viewed as a single unit of distance, so use 'is'.)
💡 If it describes 'a sum', 'a distance', or 'a period', use a singular verb.
Rule 5: Titles and Subjects ending in -s are Singular
Names of subjects (Physics, Economics) or titles of books/movies (The Arabian Nights) end in 's' but represent a single entity. They always take a Singular Verb.
Examples
- ✔ Physics is my favorite subject. — भौतिकी मेरा पसंदीदा विषय है।
- ✔ Mathematics is difficult for many students. — गणित कई छात्रों के लिए कठिन है।
- ✔ The Arabian Nights is an interesting book. — द अरेबियन नाइट्स एक दिलचस्प किताब है।
- ✔ The news is true. — खबर सच है।
- ✔ Politics is a dirty game. — राजनीति एक गंदा खेल है।
Common mistakes
- ✘ Economics are a tough subject.
- ✔ Economics is a tough subject. (Economics is the name of a single subject, so use 'is'.)
💡 Don't let the 's' at the end fool you; names are always singular.
Rule 6: 'There is/are' depends on the following Subject
In sentences starting with 'There', the verb agrees with the real subject that follows it. Use 'is/was' for singular and 'are/were' for plural subjects.
Examples
- ✔ There is a big tree near my house. — मेरे घर के पास एक बड़ा पेड़ है।
- ✔ There are many stars in the sky. — आसमान में कई तारे हैं।
- ✔ There was no water in the jug. — जग में पानी नहीं था।
- ✔ There were fifty students in the class. — कक्षा में पचास छात्र थे।
- ✔ There is many a slip between the cup and the lip. — काम पूरा होने से पहले कई बाधाएं आ सकती हैं।
Common mistakes
- ✘ There is many mistakes in your essay.
- ✔ There are many mistakes in your essay. (The real subject 'mistakes' is plural, so use 'are'.)
💡 Always look past the word 'There' to find the real subject.
