englishPrepositionसमय के Prepositions: at, on, in, since, for, by, till
Prepositions of Time: at, on, in, since, for, by, till
Error Spotting, Fill in the Blanks
Rule 1: at, on, in
- ✔ The coaching class starts at 7:00 AM. —
- ✔ We take a short rest at noon. —
- ✔ Street dogs usually bark at night. —
- ✔ Our village cricket team plays matches on Sunday. —
- ✔ The exam was conducted on 15th August. —
- ✔ Staff Selection Commission conducts examinations in July. —
- ✔ He joined the Indian Railways in 2021.
- ✔ Grandfather reads the newspaper in the morning. —
- ✘ The train leaves on 6:30 AM.
- ✔ The train leaves at 6:30 AM.
- ✘ My appointment is at Monday.
- ✔ My appointment is on Monday.
- ✘ He goes to the gym on the evening.
- ✔ He goes to the gym in the evening.
ट्रिक: At (छोटा समय) < On (दिन/तारीख) < In (बड़ा कालखंड)।
Rule 2: since vs for
जब किसी कार्य के शुरू होने का निश्चित समय (Point of time) दिया हो, तब 'since' लगाते हैं (जैसे: since 2018, since Monday, since 4 PM, since childhood)। जब कार्य के चलने की कुल अवधि या गिनती (Period of time / Duration) दी हो, तब 'for' लगाते हैं (जैसे: for two hours, for five days, for ten years)।
- ✔ Sunil has been preparing for CGL since 2022.
- ✔ It has been raining heavily since morning. —
- ✔ I have not seen him since last Friday. —

- ✔ The boys have been playing cricket for three hours. —
- ✔ She has lived in this village since her birth. —
- ✔ The farmer has waited for the monsoon for two months. —
- ✘ He has been sleeping since four hours.
- ✔ He has been sleeping for four hours.
- ✘ We have been living in Delhi for 2015.
- ✔ We have been living in Delhi since 2015. ('2015' शुरुआत का निश्चित साल (Point of time) है, इसलिए 'since' लगेगा।)
Rule 3: by vs till / until
- ✔ You must submit the application form by 5 PM. —
- ✔ The construction of the highway will finish by December. —
- ✔ The library remains open till 9 PM every day.
- ✔ He studied in his room till midnight. —
- ✔ Please wait here until the doctor arrives. —
- ✔ I will complete my revision by tomorrow morning. —
- ✘ Pay your examination fee till Monday or your form will be rejected.
- ✔ Pay your examination fee by Monday or your form will be rejected.
- ✘ The grocery shop remains open by 10 PM.
- ✔ The grocery shop remains open till 10 PM.
Rule 4: in vs within
भविष्य के संदर्भ में 'in + समय' का अर्थ होता है 'दी गई अवधि खत्म होने पर' (at the end of that period)। जबकि 'within + समय' का अर्थ होता है 'दी गई अवधि खत्म होने से पहले ही' (before the end of that period)।
- ✔ The train will arrive in ten minutes. —
- ✔ He will finish his graduation in three years.
- ✔ You must repay the bank loan within thirty days. —

- ✔ The results will be declared in two months. —
- ✘ Submit your assignment in three days, not a single minute later.
- ✔ Submit your assignment within three days, not a single minute later.
- ✘ The fast express will reach Kanpur within two hours exactly at the scheduled time.
- ✔ The fast express will reach Kanpur in two hours exactly at the scheduled time.
Rule 5: during vs for
(When) का, और इसके बाद किसी घटना, मौसम या अवधि का नाम (Noun) आता है (जैसे: during the match, during winter, during the speech)। (How long) का, और इसके बाद समय की मात्रा या संख्या आती है (जैसे: for two hours, for six months)।
- ✔ Many people drink hot tea during the winter. —
- ✔ He did not speak a single word during the meeting. —

- ✘ She fell asleep for the film.
- ✔ She fell asleep during the film.
(Revision)
- घड़ी का निश्चित समय, दोपहर और रात के साथ 'at' का प्रयोग करें (at 5 PM, at noon, at night)।
- सप्ताह के दिनों और तारीखों के नाम से पहले 'on' का प्रयोग करें (on Monday, on 15th August)।
- महीनों, वर्षों, शताब्दियों और दिन के पहरों के लिए 'in' का प्रयोग करें (in May, in 2024, in the morning)।
- कार्य के शुरुआत के बिंदु (Point of time) के लिए 'since' और कुल समय की गिनती (Duration) के लिए 'for' लगाएं।

English version — Prepositions of Time: at, on, in, since, for, by, till
In English, different prepositions are used to express different aspects of time, whereas Hindi often relies on a single postposition like 'mein' or 'se'. This leads to frequent errors by Hindi-medium aspirants in SSC and Railway exams. This topic is heavily tested in Error Spotting, Fill in the Blanks, and Sentence Improvement.
Rule 1: Use of at, on, in (Exact time, days/dates, and longer periods)
Use 'at' for precise clock times, noon, and night. Use 'on' for specific days and dates. Use 'in' for months, years, centuries, and parts of the day (morning, afternoon, evening).
Examples
- ✔ The coaching class starts at 7:00 AM. —
- ✔ We take a short rest at noon. —
- ✔ Street dogs usually bark at night. —
- ✔ Our village cricket team plays matches on Sunday. —
- ✔ The exam was conducted on 15th August. —

- ✘ He goes to the gym on the evening.
- ✔ He goes to the gym in the evening. (Parts of the day take 'in the', not 'on the'.)
Rule 2: since vs for (Point of time vs Period of time)

Examples
- ✔ Sunil has been preparing for CGL since 2022.

Rule 3: by vs till / until (Deadline vs Continuity up to a point)
'By' indicates a deadline (not later than a specific point in time). 'Till' or 'Until' means up to a certain point, showing that an ongoing state or action continues without stopping until that moment.
Examples
- ✔ You must submit the application form by 5 PM. —

Examples

- ✔ The results will be declared in two months. —
Common mistakes
- ✘ Submit your assignment in three days, not a single minute later.

- ✘ The fast express will reach Kanpur within two hours exactly at the scheduled time.
- ✔ The fast express will reach Kanpur in two hours exactly at the scheduled time. (Action happening at the end of the full duration takes 'in'.)
Rule 5: during vs for (When something happens vs How long it lasts)

Examples
- ✔ Many people drink hot tea during the winter. —

- ✘ She fell asleep for the film.
- ✔ She fell asleep during the film. ('The film' is an event/period noun, so use 'during'.)
Quick revision
- Use 'at' for precise clock times, noon, and night (at 5 PM, at noon, at night).
