Fixed Prepositions with Verbs (Part 1)

💡 याद रखें: A-O (Accuse-Of) और C-W (Charge-With) की जोड़ी होती है।

नियम 2: Abstain, Refrain और Prevent (बचाव या रोकना)

इन तीनों Verbs का मतलब किसी चीज़ से दूर रहना या रोकना होता है, और इनके साथ हमेशा 'from' आता है। 'from' के बाद अगर कोई क्रिया (Verb) आए, तो वह हमेशा 'V-ing' (Gerund) फॉर्म में होती है। सूत्र: Verb + from + V-ing.

Believe

Comply (पालन करना) और Deal (निपटना/व्यापार करना) के साथ 'with' आता है। Consist (मिलकर बना होना) के साथ 'of' आता है। Confide (राज बताना) और Believe (विश्वास करना) के साथ 'in' आता है।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 Succeed, Believe और Confide तीनों के साथ 'in' लगता है।

नियम 5: Object, Aim, Look into और Apologise

English version — Fixed Prepositions with Verbs (Part 1)

In English, certain verbs are always followed by specific prepositions. Hindi-medium students often make mistakes by translating literally from Hindi (e.g., using 'accuse for' instead of 'accuse of'). This topic is highly scoring in SSC and Railway exams.

Rule 1: Accuse of and Charge with

When someone is blamed for a crime, 'Accuse' always takes 'of', while 'Charge' always takes 'with'. 'Charge' is typically used for formal legal accusations.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 Remember: A-O (Accuse-Of) and C-W (Charge-With).

Rule 2: Abstain from, Refrain from, and Prevent from

These verbs mean to stay away from or stop something, and they always take 'from'. If another verb follows 'from', it must be in the 'V-ing' (Gerund) form. Formula: Verb + from + V-ing.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 Any verb that means 'stopping' or 'staying away' usually takes 'from'.

Rule 3: Insist on, Depend on, and Congratulate on

These verbs are always followed by 'on'. Students often mistakenly use 'for' or 'to' with 'Insist', 'Depend', and 'Congratulate'.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 Never use 'for' with congratulate; always use 'on'.

Rule 4: Comply with, Deal with, Consist of, Confide in, and Believe in

Comply and Deal take 'with'. Consist takes 'of'. Confide and Believe take 'in'. These are fixed and do not change based on context.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 Succeed, Believe, and Confide all take 'in'.

Rule 5: Object to, Aim at, Look into, and Apologise to/for

Object takes 'to'. Aim takes 'at'. Look into means to investigate. For Apologise: use 'to' for a person and 'for' for the reason.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 Look into = Investigate. Never use 'into' with the word 'investigate' itself.

Rule 6: Special cases of Die and Part

Use 'Die of' for diseases and 'Die from' for other causes (hunger, wound). Use 'Part with' for things and 'Part from' for people.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 Die + Of + Disease (D-O-D).
