Participle और Dangling Participle

Participle and Dangling Participle

English version — Participle and Dangling Participle

A participle (V-ing or V3) acts as an adjective. Hindi-medium students often confuse it with continuous tenses or fail to link the participle phrase to the correct subject, leading to the 'dangling' error. Exams test this via error spotting and sentence improvement questions.

Rule 1: Using V-ing (Present Participle) as an adjective

When a noun is performing an action, use V-ing as an adjective. It answers the question 'What kind?'. It translates to the doer of the action.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 If the noun is the source of the feeling or action, use V-ing.

Rule 2: Using V3 (Past Participle) as an adjective

When a noun receives an action, use V3 as an adjective. It translates to 'done' or 'completed'.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 If the noun receives the feeling or action, use V3.

Rule 3: Identifying the Dangling Participle error

The subject of the introductory participle phrase must be the same as the subject of the main clause. If they don't match, it is a 'Dangling Participle' error.

Examples

Common mistakes

💡 Check: Does the main subject do the action in the participle phrase? If not, it's dangling.
