(Unit Digit)

Number System: Unit Digit

SSC CGL

English version — Number System: Unit Digit

In SSC CGL Tier-1, 2-3 questions come from Number System. This is an easy way to secure 4-6 marks.

The method

To find the unit digit of a power, divide the exponent by 4. Use the remainder as the new exponent for the last digit of the base. If the remainder is 0, use 4 as the exponent.

Worked example

1) What is the unit digit of 247 raised to 15? Divide 15 by 4, the remainder is 3. Now calculate 7 raised to 3 (7*7*7 = 343). The unit digit is 3.

2) What is the unit digit of 124 raised to 12? Divide 12 by 4, the remainder is 0. So, use 4 as the exponent (4*4*4*4 = 256). The unit digit is 6.

Watch out

1) If the remainder is 0, do not use 0 as the exponent; always use 4.

2) The unit digit of 0, 1, 5, and 6 remains the same regardless of the power.

Shortcut

If the last digit of the base is 4 and the power is even, the unit digit is always 6. If the power is odd, the unit digit is 4.
