Introduction to Trigonometry
SSC CGL
- (क) 3/4
- (ख) 4/3
- (ग) 1
- (घ) 0.5
sinθ/cosθ = tanθ = 4/3
2. sin² 20° + sin² 70°
- (क) 2
- (ख) 4
- (ग) 0
- (घ) 1
(tanθ + cotθ)² = tan²θ + cot²θ + 2(tanθ*cotθ) = 2² = 4.
4. cos 0° * cos 30° * cos 45° * cos 60° * cos 90°
- (क) 1/3
- (ख) 3
- (ग) 1
- (घ) 0
sec²θ - tan²θ = 1, इसलिए (secθ + tanθ)(secθ - tanθ) = 1, तो 3 * x = 1
English version — Introduction to Trigonometry
Trigonometry appears in 2-3 questions in SSC CGL. It is the easiest way to secure 4-6 marks.
The method
Trigonometry is based on a right-angled triangle. Use 'SOH CAH TOA' to remember ratios. sin = Opposite/Hypotenuse, cos = Adjacent/Hypotenuse, tan = Opposite/Adjacent. Remember the identity: sin²θ + cos²θ = 1.
Worked example
Example 1: If sinθ = 3/5, what is cosθ? Solution: We know sin²θ + cos²θ = 1. So, (3/5)² + cos²θ = 1. 9/25 + cos²θ = 1. cos²θ = 1 - 9/25 = 16/25. Thus, cosθ = 4/5.
Example 2: Find the value of tan 45° + sin 30°. Solution: tan 45° = 1 and sin 30° = 1/2. So, 1 + 1/2 = 3/2 = 1.5.
Watch out
1. Do not confuse degrees and radians. 2. Do not forget to square the values when using sin²θ + cos²θ = 1.
Shortcut
If sinθ = cos(90-θ), always use the rule θ1 + θ2 = 90°.
