Rules of Possessive Case ('s)
Possessive Case का मतलब है 'अधिकार' या 'संबंध' बताना। हिंदी माध्यम के छात्र अक्सर निर्जीव वस्तुओं (Non-living things) के साथ भी 's लगा देते हैं, जो कि गलत है। SSC और Railway परीक्षाओं में 's और 'of' के सही चुनाव पर बहुत सवाल पूछे जाते हैं।
नियम 1: सजीव बनाम निर्जीव (Living vs Non-living)
सजीव (Living things) जैसे इंसान और जानवरों के साथ 's का प्रयोग करें। निर्जीव (Non-living things) के साथ 's का प्रयोग न करें, इसके बजाय 'of' का प्रयोग करें।
उदाहरण
- ✔ Mohan's brother is a doctor. — मोहन का भाई एक डॉक्टर है।
- ✔ The cow's milk is very healthy. — गाय का दूध बहुत स्वास्थ्यवर्धक होता है।
- ✔ The cover of this book is red. — इस किताब का कवर लाल है।
- ✔ The legs of the table are broken. — मेज की टांगें टूटी हुई हैं।
- ✔ The roof of the house needs repair. — घर की छत को मरम्मत की जरूरत है।

आम गलती

- ✘ This building's height is huge.
- ✔ The height of this building is huge. (इमारत निर्जीव है, 'of' का प्रयोग सही है।)
💡 फर्नीचर, इमारत या किताबों के साथ कभी 's न लगाएं; हमेशा 'of' का प्रयोग करें।
नियम 2: समय, दूरी और मानवीकरण (Time, Distance, and Personification)
कुछ निर्जीव चीजें जैसे समय (Time), दूरी (Distance), वजन (Weight) और प्रकृति की चीजों के साथ 's का प्रयोग सही माना जाता है। इसे मानवीकरण (Personification) कहते हैं।
उदाहरण
- ✔ I need a day's leave for my sister's wedding. — मुझे अपनी बहन की शादी के लिए एक दिन की छुट्टी चाहिए।
- ✔ It is just a stone's throw from my house. — यह मेरे घर से बस थोड़ी ही दूरी पर है।

- ✔ He took a month's salary in advance. — उसने एक महीने का वेतन एडवांस में लिया।
💡 Day, week, sun और earth जैसे शब्द अपवाद हैं और इनके साथ 's लग सकता है।
नियम 3: संयुक्त बनाम अलग अधिकार (Joint vs Separate Possession)
अगर दो लोग एक ही चीज़ के मालिक हैं, तो केवल अंतिम नाम के साथ 's लगाएं। अगर दोनों की अलग-अलग चीज़ें हैं, तो दोनों के साथ 's लगाएं।
उदाहरण
- ✔ Ram and Shyam's shop is very famous. — राम और श्याम की दुकान (एक ही दुकान) बहुत प्रसिद्ध है।

- ✘ Ram's and Shyam's shop is closed.
- ✔ Ram and Shyam's shop is closed. (अगर दुकान एक है (is), तो 's सिर्फ आखिरी नाम पर लगेगा।)
💡 Verb देखें: अगर verb एकवचन है, तो 's अंत में एक बार लगाएं; अगर बहुवचन है, तो दोनों नामों पर लगाएं।
नियम 4: 'S' की ध्वनि और खास मुहावरे (Hissing Sound & Phrases)
जब किसी शब्द के अंत में 's' की आवाज़ (Hissing sound) आती है, तो केवल Apostrophe (') लगाएं, 's' नहीं। कुछ खास वाक्यांशों में भी यही नियम चलता है।

- ✔ For justice' sake, tell the truth. — न्याय की खातिर, सच बताओ।
आम गलती

- ✔ For goodness' sake. (Goodness में 's' की ध्वनि है, इसलिए दोबारा 's' नहीं लगेगा।)
💡 अगर कोई बहुवचन शब्द 's' पर खत्म होता है (जैसे 'students'), तो अंत में सिर्फ (') लगाएं।
नियम 5: Double Possessive और 'Of' का नियम
कभी भी लगातार दो बार 's का प्रयोग न करें। साथ ही, 'a friend of mine' जैसा स्ट्रक्चर सही होता है, लेकिन 'of' के साथ दोबारा 's का गलत प्रयोग न करें।

- ✔ The car of my brother's friend. (लगातार दो बार 's का प्रयोग गलत है, 'of' का सहारा लें।)
💡 लगातार 's + 's से बचें। 'The [Noun] of [Person]'s [Noun]' वाला पैटर्न अपनाएं।

English version — Rules of Possessive Case ('s)
Possessive Case shows ownership or relationship. Hindi-medium students often incorrectly use 's with non-living objects. In SSC and Railway exams, questions frequently test the correct usage of 's versus 'of'.
Rule 1: Living vs Non-living
Use 's with living beings like humans and animals. Do not use 's with non-living objects; use 'of' instead. Formula: [Living + 's + Noun] OR [Noun + of + Non-living].
Examples
- ✔ Mohan's brother is a doctor. — मोहन का भाई एक डॉक्टर है।
- ✔ The cow's milk is very healthy. — गाय का दूध बहुत स्वास्थ्यवर्धक होता है।
- ✔ The cover of this book is red. — इस किताब का कवर लाल है।
- ✔ The legs of the table are broken. — मेज की टांगें टूटी हुई हैं।
- ✔ The roof of the house needs repair. — घर की छत को मरम्मत की जरूरत है।
- ✔ My sister's bag is missing. — मेरी बहन का बैग गायब है।
Common mistakes
- ✘ The table's legs are carved.
- ✔ The legs of the table are carved. (Table is non-living, so use 'of' instead of 's'.)
- ✘ This building's height is huge.
- ✔ The height of this building is huge. (Building is non-living; 'of' is the correct structure.)
💡 Never use 's with furniture, buildings, or books; always use 'of'.
Rule 2: Time, Distance, and Personification
Certain non-living things like Time, Distance, Weight, and elements of Nature can take 's. This is an exception often tested in exams.
Examples
- ✔ I need a day's leave for my sister's wedding. — मुझे अपनी बहन की शादी के लिए एक दिन की छुट्टी चाहिए।
- ✔ It is just a stone's throw from my house. — यह मेरे घर से बस थोड़ी ही दूरी पर है।
- ✔ The sun's rays are very hot today. — आज सूरज की किरणें बहुत गर्म हैं।
- ✔ A kilometer's journey is not long for him. — एक किलोमीटर की यात्रा उसके लिए लंबी नहीं है।
- ✔ He took a month's salary in advance. — उसने एक महीने का वेतन एडवांस में लिया।
💡 Words like day, week, sun, and earth are exceptions and can take 's.
Rule 3: Joint vs Separate Possession
If two people own the same thing (joint), add 's to the last name only. If they own different things (separate), add 's to both names.
Examples
- ✔ Ram and Shyam's shop is very famous. — राम और श्याम की दुकान (एक ही दुकान) बहुत प्रसिद्ध है।
- ✔ Ram's and Shyam's shops are in different cities. — राम और श्याम की दुकानें (दो अलग दुकानें) अलग-अलग शहरों में हैं।
- ✔ My mother and father's room is upstairs. — मेरे माता और पिता का कमरा (एक कमरा) ऊपर है।
- ✔ Sita's and Gita's husbands are engineers. — सीता और गीता के पति (दो अलग व्यक्ति) इंजीनियर हैं।
- ✔ The Prime Minister and the President's meeting was successful. — प्रधानमंत्री और राष्ट्रपति की बैठक (एक साझा बैठक) सफल रही।
Common mistakes
- ✘ Ram's and Shyam's shop is closed.
- ✔ Ram and Shyam's shop is closed. (If the shop is one (indicated by 'is'), use 's only on the last name.)
💡 Check the verb: if it's singular, use 's once at the end; if plural, use 's with both.
Rule 4: Hissing Sound and Special Phrases
If a word ends with an 's' sound, add only the apostrophe ('), not 's. This also applies to specific traditional phrases.
Examples
- ✔ For goodness' sake, stop shouting. — भलाई के लिए, चिल्लाना बंद करो।
- ✔ He follows Jesus' teachings. — वह ईसा मसीह की शिक्षाओं का पालन करता है।
- ✔ I did it for conscience' sake. — मैंने इसे अपनी अंतरात्मा की खातिर किया।
- ✔ The boys' hostel is near the park. — लड़कों का हॉस्टल पार्क के पास है।
- ✔ For justice' sake, tell the truth. — न्याय की खातिर, सच बताओ।
Common mistakes
- ✘ For goodness's sake.
- ✔ For goodness' sake. (Goodness ends in a hissing sound, so only ' is used.)
💡 If a plural word ends in 's' (like 'students'), just add (') at the end.
Rule 5: Double Possessive and 'Of' Rule
Never use two apostrophes ('s) consecutively. Also, follow the correct structure like 'a friend of mine' or 'a book of Ram's'.
Examples
- ✔ He is a friend of mine. — वह मेरा एक दोस्त है।
- ✔ The car of my brother's friend is new. — मेरे भाई के दोस्त की कार नई है।
- ✔ This is a house of my uncle's. — यह मेरे चाचा के घरों में से एक है।
- ✔ I saw a painting of Rahul's. — मैंने राहुल की एक पेंटिंग देखी।
- ✔ The daughter of my neighbor's sister is cute. — मेरे पड़ोसी की बहन की बेटी प्यारी है।
Common mistakes
- ✘ My brother's friend's car.
- ✔ The car of my brother's friend. (Double possessive with 's is avoided; use 'of' for the first relation.)
💡 Avoid 's + 's. Use 'The [Noun] of [Person]'s [Noun]' pattern.
