Degrees of Comparison (तुलना की अवस्थाएँ)

Degrees of Comparison

📖 किताब की तरह पढ़ें📝 इस परीक्षा का मॉक टेस्ट

Adjective (विशेषण) की तुलना करने के लिए तीन Degrees होती हैं: Positive, Comparative और Superlative। हिंदी-माध्यम के छात्र अक्सर 'than' की जगह 'to' लगाने में, 'more better' जैसे double comparative में और 'unique' जैसे शब्दों के साथ 'most' जोड़ने में गलती करते हैं। SSC और Railway की परीक्षाओं में Error Spotting और Fill in the Blanks में इन नियमों पर सीधे प्रश्न पूछे जाते हैं।

💡 दो की तुलना में '-er / more + than' और दो से अधिक में 'the + -est / most' का प्रयोग करें। परीक्षा में 'than' देखकर Superlative Degree न लगाएँ।ary shortcut for this rule in at most two short sentences.

ary trick.

Rule 3: Latin Adjectives (-ior वाले शब्द) और Prior के साथ 'than' नहीं, 'to' लगता है

ary trick.

Rule 4: Prefer और Preferable के नियम ('to' का प्रयोग और 'more' का निषेध)

ary trick.

Rule 5: Non-gradable / Absolute Adjectives (जिनकी कोई Degree नहीं होती)

कुछ Adjectives ऐसे पूर्ण अर्थ को दर्शाते हैं जिन्हें कम या ज्यादा नहीं किया जा सकता। इसलिए इनके पहले more, most, very नहीं लगता और न ही इनमें -er या -est जोड़ा जा सकता है। मुख्य शब्द: unique (अद्वितीय), perfect (पूर्ण), complete (सम्पूर्ण), ideal (आदर्श), universal (सार्वभौमिक), dead, round, square।

उदाहरण

आम गलती

💡 Unique, perfect, complete और ideal से पहले परीक्षा में 'more' या 'most' दिखे तो वही भाग गलत होता है।ary trick.

English version — Degrees of Comparison

Adjectives have three degrees of comparison: Positive, Comparative, and Superlative. Students frequently make mistakes by using 'than' instead of 'to' with Latin adjectives, forming double comparatives like 'more better', or placing 'most' before absolute words like 'unique'. These core rules are tested repeatedly in SSC and Railway exams through error detection and sentence improvement questions.

Rule 1: Formation and Usage of Degrees

The positive degree expresses a quality without comparison. The comparative degree compares two persons or things, usually taking '-er' or 'more' followed by 'than'. The superlative degree compares more than two items, typically taking '-est' or 'most' and requires the definite article 'the' before it.

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 2: Never Use Double Comparative or Double Superlative

Do not combine 'more' with '-er' or 'most' with '-est'. If an adjective forms its comparative or superlative degree by adding a suffix, adding 'more' or 'most' before it creates a grammatical error called a double comparative or double superlative.

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 3: Use 'to' (not 'than') with Senior, Junior, Superior, Inferior, and Prior

Comparative adjectives ending in '-ior' (senior, junior, superior, inferior, anterior, posterior) along with 'prior' take the preposition 'to' instead of the conjunction 'than' to indicate comparison.

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 4: Prefer and Preferable Take 'to' and Reject 'more'

Both the verb 'prefer' and the adjective 'preferable' take the preposition 'to' instead of 'than'. Furthermore, because 'preferable' already conveys a comparative sense, it must never be preceded by 'more' or 'most'.

Examples

Common mistakes

Rule 5: Absolute Adjectives Cannot Take Comparative or Superlative Forms

Certain adjectives represent an absolute or ultimate state that cannot be graded or measured in degrees. Consequently, they do not accept comparative or superlative forms (no more, most, very, -er, or -est). Common absolute adjectives include unique, perfect, complete, ideal, universal, round, and dead.
